August 2018 News from ISAHU

State Convention Recap, Carol Cutter Golf Outing Success, and more!

President's Message

Over the course of the year ISAHU conducts three major statewide events. For the first time ever, the Carol Cutter Golf Outing and ISAHU State Convention were held on back to back days in July. The change in having the events on back to back days was minor but coupled with venue changes, major upgrades and how both events are perceived by member and non-members alike was a major undertaking.

The 2018 Carol Cutter Golf Outing had the largest field of participants by far in the 8-year history of the event. Although the weather was not fully cooperative it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants or the success of the event. The vast majority of the proceeds from this event will go to provide scholarships for first time attendees to Capitol Conference February 25-27, 2019 in Washington, DC. To all of the participates, Carol Cutter Golf Committee and those individuals that worked the event on behalf of the ISAHU Board we thank you for your effort in making this year’s event the most successful ever.

To say the 2018 ISAHU State Convention was simply a success would be an understatement. Attendance at this year’s event was the highest in recent memory. Many of those in attendance were non-members and the 2018 ISAHU Convention was their first exposure to NAHU and ISAHU. From all accounts the first impression of NAHU and ISAHU was a positive one. The agenda for the day and the presenters who provided the valuable and timely subject matter during the CE sessions were second to none. To those that served on the Convention Committee and worked the day of the event to make this an outstanding event the ISAHU Board would like to thank you for your efforts.

Mark your calendars for the 2019 ISAHU Medicare Summit May 8th 2019 at the Marriot East in Indianapolis.

Go Forth and Conquer

2018 Carol Cutter Memorial Golf Outing

With over 70 participants, the eighth annual ISAHU Carol Cutter Memorial Golf Outing was held on Monday, July 30th, at The Legends Golf Club, near Franklin, Indiana.  In addition to having a new venue for the event, it was also held the day before the annual ISAHU State Convention, which took place just a few miles north in Greenwood.  The hope in changing the location and combining it with the State Convention was that more people would attend; that seemed to work, as the attendance increased by about fifty percent over last year’s outing!  Unfortunately, the day of golf ended early as Mother Nature decided to bring rain into the picture.  However, I believe that everyone just made the most of it and had a good time!

Legislative Update

ISAHU Legislative Article for August 2018

Welcome to August in Indiana which means it’s Indiana State Fair time!  And as I’ve mentioned in the past, I’m a very “Fair” person (haven’t missed since I was 6 years old!).  If you’re in the Indy area you ought to swing by one day/night.  It’s a great event!

Federal Update
AHP’s (Association Health Plans), Drug pricing, ACA risk adjustment payments, Navigator funds, MLR, etc continue under discussion and are in various stages of change/implementation as we speak.  In addition, Repeal of the HIT tax and the Excise/Cadillac tax, allowance of COBRA as creditable coverage, changes to Medicare Advantage plans and other initiatives are in the forefront of NAHU’s efforts in D.C.

As always, continued Thanks goes to NAHU’s staff – eg, Janet Trautwein, John Greene, Chris Hartman and Marcy Buckner as they help direct the overall legislative process in D.C.

Other items –

Be sure to visit www.nahu.org for more detailed information on all NAHU Federal legislative
activities.

State House Update

A preliminary meeting has taken place with Indiana House Insurance Committee Chair - Martin Carbaugh regarding Section 1332.  Meetings are still in process of being set with other appropriate leaders in the Indiana House and Senate to discuss next steps on promoting Section 1332 .  The discussions will relate to the possible use of “risk pool” Federal and State funds to encourage more competition from a payer and plan standpoint.  Use of non-compliant ACA product offerings is also a possibility.  All new guidance from D.C. will be a part of discussions.  Any updates on such discussions will continue to be shared.

ISAHU PAC Update

Congratulations to the following ISAHU PAC award winners announced at the state convention:
  • Top Chapter – Total individual and chapter contributions – Southwest AHU
  • Top Chapter – Highest percentage of members contributing – Bloomington AHU
  • Top Individual Contributors – Don Griffey, Greater Northern AHU and Nicole Fairbairn, Indy AHU

Thank you to the following who stepped up at the conference to begin recurring contributions:
  • Charlie Mayberry, South Central
  • Roger Garrett, Southwest
  • Jennifer Mitchen, Indy

ISAHU PAC is established to contribute financial support to campaigns of state elected officials that are aligned with us and our financial support to candidates is only as strong as our treasury allows.   At the ISAHU convention on July 31 Janet Trautwein, CEO of NAHU talked about how PAC’s give you influence and the larger the PAC, the larger the influence.

Only 2 months to the next election!

In the Indiana Senate 25 of the 50 seats are up for election and 20 retirements.   In the Indiana House all 100 seats are up.  Also up for election this year is Secretary of State, Treasurer and Auditor.  We are going to see a lot of new faces in the State house the next couple of years!  We need your contributions to help get us a seat at the table!

Thank you to all ISAHU Contributors

A reminder about CE's:  As insurance professionals, we need to do our best to encourage you to take seriously the information being presented at these courses and learn the information by being actively present.  Therefore, be sure and stay for the full class (short bathroom breaks allowed), and do not read newspapers, use your computer (unless taking class notes)  or talk loudly. The sole purpose of CE is to increase your knowledge and professionalism in order to better inform your clients of our highly complicated insurance business and to avoid chances of needing to use your Errors and Omissions coverage.
Chapter Updates.

Greetings from Southwest Indiana! All I can say is what an amazing Indiana State Convention event – the venue, the speaker line up and the vendors were all top-notch. The majority of our board members were lucky enough to be able to get away from the office and participate in this wonderful conference. Our chapter was honored with the distinction of ISAHU Chapter of the Year which is from a category of 7 local chapters. SWIAHU also received ISAHU Top Chapter in Individual and State PAC Chapter Contributions. Additionally, our chapter was recognized again for attaining the Pacesetter Award and Gold Certification status. Chis Barthel was recognized for being a Leading Producer Round Table Golden Eagle and Roger Garret was nominated by his peers as SWIAHU Member of the Year.

SWIAHU has some upcoming events on the schedule and we hope you can join us. August 28th is our first Medicare Summit with 4.5 hours of CE right before start of Open Enrollment and September 13 is our Annual Golf Scramble at Eagle Valley. Please go to our website www.swiahu.org to register or for more information. We are also in the planning stages for our Health Insurance Awareness Day, more details later.

We are all so proud to be a part of such a vibrant professional organization and we continually strive to do our small part to make it a better.
