September 2018 News from ISAHU

R3 Conference, Legislative Update, Member Spotlight, and more!

President's Message

On August 6th and 7th 2018, the Region 3 Regional Leadership Conference was held in Cleveland, Ohio. ISAHU and local Indiana Chapters were well represented at the conference.  As the two-day event unfolded there was an obvious theme that carried throughout the conference. That theme was “You have to ask.” NAHU leaders throughout the region and nation told their stories of someone asking them to join NAHU, asking them to serve in a leadership role in their local, state and sometimes regional and national levels.

Very few if anyone will join something without first being asked to join. All of us as members of NAHU know at least one person that should be a member of this association that isn’t. Those that should be a member probably won’t become a member without someone asking them to do so. The question we must each ask ourselves is: do we believe in this association enough to make 5-minute phone call to ask that non-member to become a member?
If you don’t ask, the answer is already no.

ISAHU Member Profile - Bill Robinson and Andrea Bogard

Like many of us, Andrea Bogard came into the insurance industry more by chance than by choice.  After spending her children’s formative years as a stay at home parent, when the time came to join the workforce, she took a job as a secretary at an insurance agency.  That position evolved into her quickly getting her insurance license, and over the course of the next 15 years or so, her learning the industry and eventually, buying the agency.

Her joining NAHU wasn’t quite as much of a fortunate accident.  Bill Robinson, who, at the time was a representative for American Community Insurance Company, had to do quite a bit of work to get her to join the association.  It was a task that took him nearly 3 years to complete.  His work frequently brought him into...

New Member Benefit

Recently the ISAHU Board of Directors approved two new member benefit programs - the Office 360 program and the Next Agency program. Office 360 provides access to office supplies at savings consistently below other office supply programs: free delivery to all commercial locations - home based businesses get free delivery for orders of $90 or more and only a $10 delivery free for orders less than $90. For more information on how to enroll in this program go to the ISAHU website and click on "Become a Member."

Next Agency is a program providing agency software. When contacting Office 360 and Next Agency be sure and tell them you are a current ISAHU member. ISAHU receives a small dividend from these programs for all enrollment and sales to current members. These funds will be used to offset ISAHU member expenses. For general questions on either of these programs please feel free to contact ISAHU President Elect Jeff Goodwin at or 317.691.9086.

ISAHU Legislative Update

Dwight "D" Hall
ISAHU Legislative Chair

Welcome to September and unfortunately the end of Summer.  It sure seems like it just began!!  But never fear, we’ll still have plenty of “heat” due to the political season heating up!
Federal Update

As noted last month, AHP’s (Association Health Plans), Drug pricing, ACA risk adjustment payments, Navigator funds, MLR, etc continue under discussion and are in various stages of change/implementation as we speak.  In addition, return to a 40 work week rule, Repeal/delay of the HIT tax and the Excise/Cadillac tax, allowance of COBRA as creditable coverage, changes to Medicare Advantage plans, employer reporting improvements and other initiatives are in the forefront of NAHU’s efforts in D.C.
As always, continued Thanks goes to NAHU’s staff – eg, Janet Trautwein, John Greene, Chris Hartman and Marcy Buckner as they help direct the overall legislative process in D.C.  ...

A reminder about CE's:  As insurance professionals, we need to do our best to encourage you to take seriously the information being presented at these courses and learn the information by being actively present.  Therefore, be sure and stay for the full class (short bathroom breaks allowed), and do not read newspapers, use your computer (unless taking class notes)  or talk loudly. The sole purpose of CE is to increase your knowledge and professionalism in order to better inform your clients of our highly complicated insurance business and to avoid chances of needing to use your Errors and Omissions coverage.
Chapter Updates.

Greetings from Northeast Indiana! I trust this finds everyone rested and prepared for the fourth quarter!

Summer is winding down and fall is soon to be upon us, where does time go?  Cool days are coming, boat rides will require jackets, and cottages/lake homes are being prepped  for winter hibernation. All this leads to a busy yet satisfying quarter of professional activity.

Labor Day being the unofficial last weekend of the summer allowed us to prepare for what’s ahead. This is the time of year where those in the Senior market don’t get a chance to sleep, those in the group market are managing renewals and taking advantage of new opportunities, and if you are in the individual market you are just hoping the carriers stick around for another year so your clients can secure coverage. No matter which market or markets you serve, your service to your clients is needed now more than ever.  Remain professional and diligent in your service to your clients and prospects; we are the face of NAHU on a local level.
With this busy 4th quarter hopefully you will still find time for health underwriter activities. We just wrapped our golf outing and our September monthly membership meeting.  We will continue to have monthly meetings every month through the end of the year – see the ISAHU calendar or

As always we are here to serve you, the members. Should you have any questions or comments please feel free to share.

Live Free, Be well, Get Involved!
Jeff Fabini, 2018-19 NEIAHU President
Things continue to “Rock and Roll” in the South Central chapter!
I can’t tell you what a fantastic Board your Chapter has, and not because I am the current President. We are doing so many awesome things as a team such as creating and implementing a new Partnership Program, we had our first special membership event in Columbus on Sept 13th to attract more members and finally our website is coming to fruition. None of these things could be done by one person - I encourage you to reach out to a Board member and see what you can do to be more active in this great Chapter.

We had 9/11 remembrance with a Veteran Color Guard, soloist, and various personal experiences of that day by our members. Our venue for this meeting was a museum for a former Air Force base that was located on the premises.

Speaking of Christmas, we have started the process of getting our holiday dinner together.  It is to be held December 17th. I'm sure it will be a fun and entertaining event so mark your calendar. Please note it is the last day of OEP and we figured by then if it isn’t done by then, we sure will be!
Lastly, we are always looking for new CE opportunities and if you happen across a good one please let us know. We are looking at having Carolyn McNairy come back with TASC and do another CE in early 2019. I found her to be a delightfully entertaining speaker even though the topic can be disheartening… Dept of Labor issues, compliance problems, should I go on?

Charlie Mayberry
2018-19 SCIAHU President
Update from Greater Bloomington -

Our Next Meeting Date Tuesday Oct 9th 11:30 am-1:00 pm

Our meeting will be at Bobby’s Colorado Steakhouse.  We will be having a traditional business meeting and updates - our guest speaker is from the Cincinnati office of the Department of Labor.  We are still finalizing the topics being covered but it will be an informative meeting.
We are currently working on our final items for our golf outing.  I think as we read this the golf outing will have occurred and hopefully been a great success.  For those of you who played or sponsored thank you very much for your support!
Doug Skinner
2018-19 GBAHU President
GNIAHU had an excellent September Medicare meeting.  We brought in attorney Charles Backs of Bears, Mallers Backs & Salin to speak on Estate and Medicaid planning.  The room was very engaged and we definitely needed more time as questions were coming in from every table.  That presentation was followed up by a remote presentation from Charo Boyd, Public Affairs Specialist for the Social Security Administration, and finally a presentation from Mike Jones from Humana on Veterans Benefits.  We earned 3 CE hours in the half day meeting and learned a lot along the way!
Humana was our event sponsor and also presented pins to our members who are also veterans of the military.
The GNIAHU golf outing continues to be a huge success thanks to our many sponsors and the volunteers that continue to improve on the outing every year.  This year we added a photo booth stop and a bag toss game.  In addition to our sponsors, on the day of the outing, we raised money for ISAHU PAC and an additional $600 for this year’s charity organization, Hello Gorgeous, a local not for profit that provides free makeovers to women battling cancer.

2018-19 GNIAHU Communications Chair
