It's Triple Crown Season!

By Carolyn Beck, ISAHU Awards Chair

As a former Kentucky girl, when I think of Triple Crown I think of the Kentucky Derby! We are officially entering the Triple Crown Season when we enter the month of May!

NAHU offers a Triple Crown which is a lot easier to qualify for than earning Horse racing’s Triple Crown.

To qualify for the Triple Crown, within the calendar year (01/01-12/31), a member must:

  1. HUPAC: Participate in $12 x 12 draft program or contribute $150 total for the year
  2. Membership: Recruit two or more new members
  3. Advocacy: Use Operation Shout to send three or more messages

One, two, three -- it's that simple!

While members have the entire year to complete the requirements, winners will be announced quarterly. Once a member achieves Triple Crown, their name will appear only once on the specific quarterly qualifiers report, in the quarter in which the recognition was obtained. Once earned, the member has qualified for that calendar year.’s off to the races! Let’s see if you can win the Triple Crown!

Legislative Updates

By Dwight "D" Hall
Federal Update

Dwight Hall with Rep. Jerry TorNAHU called on members to take action in their latest Operation Shout to ask Congress to support legislation to make needed reforms to health savings accounts (HSAs). The Bipartisan HSA Improvement Act, H.R. 5138, was introduced in March by Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), If you have not responded to it, please do so.

The IRS released Notice 2018-17 that permits small employers to claim the small business tax credit (SBTC) for non-marketplace coverage if there are no options available on the small business health options (SHOP) marketplace.

HHS continues to work on a new Rule for Short Term Health Plans. The Comment period ended April 23rd. This would allow time frames to expand from 90 days to up to a year. It is hoped that the new guidelines would be implemented perhaps in 2019. But it could be 2020. Stay tuned.

South Central Indiana AHU updates

By Andrea Bogard, SCIAHU President

When is the last time you gave some serious thought to a fire extinguisher at your monthly meeting? For those of us at South Central it was very recent! One of our longtime members, Dave Dionne, recently turned 78 and we took the opportunity to celebrate with him at our May meeting. Blowing out 78 candles in one attempt looked like this...

Congratulations again, Dave, and thank you for your devotion and loyalty to our chapter!

We have a special event planned for June 14th! Pat Griffey, NAHU Vice President, will be our guest speaker and we are honored that she will be joining us. Watch for more details to be released soon.

Our golf outing is May 18th and we’re expecting a successful day!

SCIAHU's Annual Golf Outing is this Friday!
