GEELONG REGION CROSS COUNTRY

SEASON 2015
ROUND 10 TAN RELAYS RESULTS
Hello Team,

Well, what a Saturday!

Melbourne weather really turned it on for the final race of the XCR'15 season, the Tan Relays  Sunshine and light winds put smiles on some nervous Geelong faces. Runners were required to scoot around the 3.8km loop of the Botanical Gardens as fast as possible. Team size ranged from 3 to 6 runners.

Much of the focus was on the battle in the Premier Mens race. Put simply, if Geelong won this final event we would be XCR champions for 2015.

Nick Wightman (XCR15 individual champ) had high hopes to hit that magical sub 11 mark. He was surrounded by guns from other clubs all frothing to get their team the best possible start. By halfway, several young kids surged away and held Wightman to a close 4th position at changeover. Enter Brenton Rowe. Rowe is at 1/3 volume training load after returning from injury so was far from his peak fitness. So you can imagine our surprise when he ran through the finishing shoot in front of all other teams! Mitch Thompson was off next and the race was close. Frankston had elevated a runner and now there was a front pack of 3. Mitch's finishing speed ensured GER the lead handing to Harry Smithers for leg 4. Both Harry and next runner Julian Spence had time trial style runs in the front of the field, slowly increasing the lead. There's a certain degree of confidence to be had when we have the legendary Craig Mottram anchoring the team. He could have quite easily cruised around for the team win but Craig seemed to have a point to prove today. His 10:41 final leg was the fastest witnessed since Harry Summers in 2012..

And so it was that the Men of Geelong were Premiers again. 4 rounds ago we knew it would be a mathematical miracle to gain 1st position and there wasn't even a whisper of a Premiership. Wins at Sandwon, Anglesea, Burnley and finally the Tan capped an amazing final couple of months for Geelong!

Credit must go to a tight knit group of consistent performers who put the team before their own individual goals. There's no denying the strength of the relationships between runners in the Geelong team and  the unity is often commented on by envious rival runners.

Other notable performances on Saturday were

- Mens O40 1st place
- Mens Division 6 2nd place
- Wmns U20 2nd place
