On the Brink

It's hard to believe but we actually have less than five weeks left in language school in Costa Rica before we are set to arrive in Peru on November 5. As our time winds down here we are filled with excitement about what lies ahead.

We are excited about getting to Cusco and planting some roots there through diving into the life and culture of the city. We are excited about finding and furnishing a house and making it a home. Betsy is excited to get back to homeschooling the kids and being able to devote her time fully to her ministry in the home which she has not been able to fully do while going through the rigors of language school. We are excited about finding a church to use our gifts to serve and help where needed as well as build new relationships. We are excited about the ministry of training, equipping and mobilizing Peruvian pastors and church leaders that lay ahead. In fact, Reaching and Teaching recently started a new training sight in Deaguadero, Peru (pictured below) which is several hours outside of Cusco and there are many more possibilities for more training centers and ministry opportunities that await our arrival.

Overall, we are thankful for the last 10 months as a time to focus on learning Spanish and be better introduced to Latin American culture. We are especially thankful for our amazing ministry partners who hold us up in prayer and partner with us through your sacrificial giving.
Ministry Need
The Lord is already opening up many doors for us to minister throughout the Peruvian Andes in and around Cusco, Peru. In fact, Reaching and Teaching has just started a new training center in Desaguadero, Peru (12,500 ft elevation) and there several more opportunities to meet the great need of pastoral training and equipping on the horizon once our team is on the ground in Cusco. As you can imagine navigating through the mountainous terrain to reach these villages is difficult and therefore we will need a good quality, used, 4-wheel drive vehicle like the one you see below. These usually run around $20,000.

Thus we are asking you to consider giving a special gift that the Lord will use to provide a vehicle to help meet the immense need of equipping, training and mobilizing Peruvian pastors and church leaders throughout the High Andes Region of Cusco.
  • Ethan and Titus in their Spanish class. They have two hours of Spanish everyday before starting homeschool. Ethan, Titus and Nora's Spanish is really growing quickly.
  • Sabbath meal - part of our homeschool curriculum this year. It has been great to do these Old Testament meals and talk about how they point to Christ.
  • The Lord provided for me, Betsy and the boys to attend the Costa Rica vs Panama soccer game - the height of a cultural experience.
  • We were blessed to have my parents in town recently. We had a lot of fun and even managed to get some much needed time out of the city for a day.
How is our Spanish coming along?
Everyone's Spanish is certainly growing. Betsy is working very hard in her classes and doing well. It is fun to watch her communicate more clearly and fluidly and amazing to see how far she has come in such a short time. I am enjoying my weekly tutoring session and the Old Testament class I am taking at a nearby seminary as well as getting getting together to talk about Scripture and the faith with some Costa Rican friends we have made here. The kids are doing excellent and can communicate so much in Spanish. It is a lot of fun to see. We are now trying to speak more Spanish in our home although that is always a challenge when English is so much easier :).
  • Praise God for his faithfulness through all the challenges of language school.
  • We have a place to stay while we search for a house in Cusco. We will be staying with a local pastor and his wife in Cusco.
  • Their seems to be preparing great ministry opportunities ahead of our arrival.
Prayer Requests
  • Pray for peace and joy for our family in the midst of packing and preparing for yet another transition and that our hearts and minds would be fixed on Christ.
  • We finish language school strong and that the Lord provides a great language helper for our family in Peru.
  • That the Lord will provide all we need for the purchase of a good quality ministry vehicle.
