A Cultural Crash Course

If we had planned it out in our minds, we would have arrived in Cusco, Peru from our former home in Costa Rica with a house already in hand and spent the first few weeks getting our house together and trying to rest as a family. However, the Lord had something different planned for us, something better in many ways. We were blessed to spend our first two weeks with a local pastor and his family here in Cusco. They were a great example of biblical hospitality for us and really did a great job of helping us to understand Peruvian and Cusqueñan culture. Betsy and I agreed we probably learned more about the culture here in two weeks by living with the Presa family than we would have in our first six months by ourselves. Overall, we anticipated that it would be a very stressful time but our kids did great and we had many deep conversations late into the night about life and ministry and were truly blessed by our time with the Presas.

Moving in and Showing Our Own Hospitality

First of all, we want to thank everyone for your prayers regarding our house. By God's grace we were able to find a house that is a perfect fit four our family the very first day. We moved in a week ago today and all of our furniture and appliances trickled in from Lima throughout the week. We are now only awaiting our table which is being made and will hopefully be completed this week. I am often amazed at how sacrificial and flexible Betsy is. We were in our house less than one week and we already hosted our first overnight guests - our teammate Josh and his oldest son. So she only been trying to learn to cook at this altitude and get the house in working order for us but also for them. All of this with an impending trip to Lima tomorrow. She is amazing.

Visa Trip

Tomorrow morning we will be going to Lima to start the process to obtain resident visas for Betsy and me. The kids can start their resident visa process once ours are complete. Please pray that the Lord blesses this process and that it goes smoothly for all of us.

Year End Giving Opportunity
We are still in need of funds to purchase a vehicle. The Lord is already opening up many doors for us to minister throughout the Peruvian Andes in and around Cusco, Peru. As you can imagine navigating through the mountainous terrain to reach the types of villages we will be seeking to work in is difficult and therefore we will need a good quality, used, 4WD vehicle like the one you see below. These usually cost around $20,000.

Thus we are asking you to consider a special year-end gift that the Lord will use to provide a vehicle to help meet the immense need of equipping, training and mobilizing Peruvian pastors and church leaders throughout the High Andes Region of Cusco.
  • We are so thankful for each of you who pray for us and partner with us financially. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful team of ministry partners.
  • We praise God for the hospitality we received from the Presa family and all the help we have received from the Killillay family and the ministry opportunities on the horizon.
  • We are so thankful that the Lord has provided a great house for our family.
Prayer Requests
  • Pray that our resident visa process would go well.
  • That we would continue to adjust well to new surroundings and a new culture as a family.
  • That in the midst of all the busyness of trying to settle in we will set our hearts and minds on Christ.
  • Development of good ongoing ministry opportunities and continued growth in our Spanish.
