President says opioid crisis is a national emergency, pledges more money and attention

President Trump today said he would declare the country’s opioid crisis a national emergency, saying the epidemic exceeded anything he had seen with other drugs in his lifetime. “The opioid crisis is an emergency, and I’m saying officially right now it is an emergency. It’s a national emergency. We’re going to spend a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of money on the opioid crisis,” he said. Read more. 

Marin County Advisory for Dental Practice on Safe Opioid Prescribing

The Marin County Dental Society has joined with RxSafe Marin to promote safe and appropriate opioid prescribing. We are following the lead of American Dental Association (ADA) President Carol Gomez Summerhays, who has urged dentists everywhere to take steps to help prevent the widespread abuse of opioid pain medications (ADA News, July 5, 2016). The ADA recognizes that the misuse and abuse of opioid pain relievers—such as hydrocodone (Vicodin® and Lortab®) and oxycodone (OxyContin® and Percocet®)—has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. National Perspective: Ohio city's morgues are full thanks to the opioid crisis

Ohio has been one of the states hit hardest by the crisis. Last year, 86% of overdose deaths in the state involved an opioid. In Montgomery County, the situation is particularly dire. Local officials say that more than 800 people will probably die from an opiate overdose there this year, more than double last year's record of 349 opioid deaths. A comprehensive guide to the new science of treating lower back pain

In 2017, more than 30,000 Americans will die from opioid overdoses. Opioid prescribing is common among people with back pain, with almost 20 percent receiving long-term opioid prescriptions. Here’s the outrageous part: All these opioids were being prescribed before we actually knew if they helped people with chronic lower back pain. It gets worse: Now high-quality evidence is coming in, and opioids don’t actually help many patients with chronic low back pain. Read more.

FENTANYL: Overdoses on the Rise

Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone, which includes fentanyl, increased by 72% from 2014 to 2015.3 Roughly 9,500 people died from overdoses involving synthetic opioids other than methadone in 2015. Read more.
