Nearly 10,000 Pounds of Medications Safely Disposed of in 2018

The amount of unused prescription medications in our community contributes to drug abuse, diversion and overdoses. In the U.S., 55% of people who abuse prescription painkillers get them from a friend or relative. RxSafe Marin set an annual goal of increasing safe drug disposal in Marin by 10%, through a network of safe drug disposal sites county-wide. We were able to achieve this goal in 2018. Learn more.
Marin Medical Reserve Corps Distributing Narcan

Opioid overdose remains a leading cause of accidental death in Marin. The Marin Medical Reserve Corps (MMRC) has mobilized to respond to this crisis. A team of MMRC volunteers has been certified to offer training to community groups in the use of intranasal Narcan, and provide free kits to those who may be able to offer bystander assistance in an opioid overdose. Progress in Treating Opioid Addiction in Criminal Justice

In response to the increasing frequency of opioid overdoses in state prisons, Gov. Gavin Newsom is pushing for California to spend more than $233 million over the next two years to battle substance abuse in correctional facilities. This strategy aligns with RxSafe Marin's goal of increasing access to medication assisted treatment in all healthcare settings, including the county jail. The jail recently implemented a protocol to treat inmates who are in treatment with buprenorphine for opioid use disorder at the time of incarceration. Read more.
Marin Highlighted Among Successful Local Coalition Models

Marin's response to the opioid epidemic was highlighted at the RxDrug Abuse and Heroin Summit in Atlanta last month. The presentation, entitled "Think Local, Act Local," featured RxSafe Marin and Safe Med LA as examples of community-wide action through local opioid safety coalitions. The President and First Lady attended the conference, signifying federal interest in a response that's informed by successful models. The RxSafe Marin dashboard tracks our progress against established goals county-wide.
