The Facts on America's Opioid Epidemic: It’s the deadliest drug crisis in American history. It kills about 90 Americans every day. Here are answers to some key questions about the crisis.
Marin County Jail Offering Addiction Treatment

Marin has joined a statewide learning collaborative, funded by the Department of Healthcare Services, to advance opioid addiction treatment in jails. Led by Dr. Jeff Devido, Marin County Chief of Addiction, the Marin team is supporting the RxSafe Marin goal to increase Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) countywide, and to initiate treatment for opioid addiction for eligible inmates in 2019. The learning collaborative provides best practices, technical assistance, problem-solving support, and the latest research on the use of addiction medications in county criminal justice systems. Marin Joins National Prescription Opiate Litigation

On May 9, 2018, the County of Marin joined other jurisdictions in filing a complaint against opioid manufacturers and wholesalers, alleging that the industry promoted the use of opioids that they knew to be dangerous and addictive.  

Plaintiffs’ attorneys have been busy this year sorting through documents, deposition transcripts, and data. Last week the County decided to name several members of the Sackler family, which owns privately-held Purdue Pharma and is listed among America’s wealthiest families. Purdue and the Sackler family recently agreed to pay $270 million in a similar lawsuit. Read more. Such settlements can help fund local strategies to address the epidemic.
March is California Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month

Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month was established through legislation sponsored by California State Senator Mark DeSaulnier and signed by Governor Brown in 2013. The designation of March as Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month provides the opportunity to engage our community to raise public awareness about prescription drug abuse. Read more.
West Marin Film Festival: Beautiful Boy

A free showing of Beautiful Boy at the Dance Palace Community & Cultural Center on Friday, April 5, 2019. Appreciations to Beautiful Boy's author and Inverness resident, David Sheff, for securing the rights to screen the first showing of the film in West Marin. Based on a pair of memoirs from a local father and son, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years. Teenager Nicolas Sheff seems to have it all with good grades and being an actor, artist, athlete and editor of the school newspaper. When Nic's addiction to meth threatens to destroy him, his father does whatever he can to save his son and family. Read more.
