Raindrop Technique: A Natural Method for Cold and Flu Prevention

Jillian Monack, BSN, RN, PMHN

Many people who received this year's influenza vaccine are still at risk for contracting the flu due to the unpredictable spread of H3N2 virus, which was not included in this year's vaccine. This means that we must find other ways to protect ourselves. Whether you get your yearly flu vaccine or not, I've got some great news for you: essential oils provide us natural protection from viruses and bacteria. All pure essential oils have antibacterial properties and many are antiviral. When used properly, they increase the production of white blood cells to help fight infectious illnesses. Research has found that people who consistently use pure essential oils have a higher level of resistance to illnesses, colds, flues, and diseases than does the average person. Further indications show that such individuals will recover 60-75 percent faster than those who do not use essential oils.

The Raindrop Technique uses seven therapeutic-grade essential oils and three Young Living specialty blends on the feet and up the spine. The oils used are specifically chosen for the purpose of supporting the immune system and easing muscle tension and inflammation. The Raindrop Technique was developed by Gary Young, aromatologist, and a Lakota Indian medicine man. It uses the reflex system of the body’s nervous system to release tensions, congestions, and maladjustments. The oils are worked into the feet using a technique called Vita-Flex and up the spine using light strokes with the fingers. These specific techniques have the purpose of stimulating energy impulses and dispersing the oils along the nervous system throughout the entire body. The oils are dropped six inches above the body (this is how the Raindrop Technique got its name). Most people who receive a Raindrop session report having a pleasant experience, feel better afterwards, have an improved emotional state, and even report experiencing some healing.

When I received my first Raindrop session, I had been battling ongoing fatigue and back pain. Whether my fatigue and pain were due to everyday stress or a flare up of Lyme Disease, it was hard to say. I just knew that I was ready for an effective treatment. I lie on the table, face down, and as the oils were rubbed into my feet and up my spine, I began to feel my senses awakening. The oils felt cool and warm at the same time. There was tingling and energy surges. I could feel myself breathing deeper and my body felt like it was opening. I felt spacious.

I had heard that people "grow" after a Raindrop session, but I was skeptical. We measured my height before and after the treatment and I grew almost an inch! That night I slept very soundly. In the coming weeks, I found that I had more energy and focus and when people were getting sick around me, I was feeling good. I thought, this is not only something I need to do on a regular basis for myself, but this is something I need to share with others.

Let's go through each oil that is used in the Raindrop Technique:
  • Valor- is the first and most important oil used in this technique because it helps balance the electrical energies within the body. It also helps create an environment where structural alignment can occur.
  • Thyme- is used for its ability to support the immune system by attacking any bacteria, fungus, infection, or virus that may be present. It may also help one overcome fatigue and physical weakness after an illness.
  • Oregano- works in conjunction with thyme to strengthen the immune system and to attack bacteria and viruses. It may also act as an antiseptic for the respiratory system, help balance metabolism, and help strengthen the vital centers of the body.
  • Cypress- is used for its antibacterial, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, and diuretic properties. In addition, it may function as a decongestant for the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
  • Wintergreen- is great for removing discomfort associated with the inflammation of bones, muscles, and joints. It may also help cleanse the lymphatic system.
  • Basil- is relaxing to spastic muscles and is stimulating to the nerves and to the adrenal glands.
  • Peppermint- is used to calm and strengthen the nerves, relieve cramps, aches, and pains and to help calm the respiratory system. It also has a synergistic and enhancing effect on all other oils.
  • Marjoram- is used to relax spastic muscles, soothe the nerves, relieve cramps, aches, and pains, and to help calm the respiratory system.
  • Aroma Siez- may help to relax, calm, and relieve the tension of spastic muscles resulting from sports injury, fatigue, or stress.
  • Ortho Ease- is the crowning oil to this application. It is used to help relax all the muscles of the back and legs and to help reduce any stress, arthritic pain, or tension that may exist.

Tips for Staying Well During Cold & Flu Season:
  • Wash your hands. Research shows that hand hygiene is one of the most critical things you can do to prevent the spread of illness.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep on a regular basis can help your mind and body stay healthy.
  • Exercise regularly. Getting your body moving gets your blood and lymphatics circulating, which is critical for a properly functioning immune system.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables. Phytochemicals are found in plants--fruits and vegetables. They provide us the nutrients we need to stay well.
  • Relax. There's evidence that when you put your relaxation skills into action, your interleukins -- leaders in the immune system response against cold and flu viruses -- increase in the bloodstream.

As an affirmation of the healing path we all are embarking on, I'd like to dedicate the following poem by Mary Oliver to you:

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations--
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice,
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Featured Essential Oil:

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is one of the most powerful and versatile essential oils. It contains strong immune-enhancing and antioxidant properties and supports the respiratory system. Oregano may also be used to enhance the flavor of food. Oregano is also a key oil used in the Raindrop Technique, a massage application of essential oils, which is designed to bring about electrical alignment in the body.
  • Use as a dietary supplement, try one drop in a vegetable capsule, like these, with a glass of milk (alternative forms of milk are just fine).
  • Rub on the bottoms of feet during cold and flu season
