National Women's Health Week RECAP!
National Women's Health Week 2018 was one for the books.  From our Mother's Day breakfast and lunch at The Breakfast Club and Pub to our friends at Pearl Street Brewery hosting Poses and Pints, we had a FULL week of activities!

We had almost 150 people turn out for Yoga in the Street!  Special thanks to Root Down Yoga Studio for hosting with us.  Donations for toiletries and household items that we collected are headed to New Horizons in La Crosse County and Brighter Tomorrows in Monroe County to benefit the women and families receiving services.
We had a full house for our annual Wine for Women's Health dinner this year!  We honored Nancy Medinger, a dedicated community partner, and former Board of Directors president at Essential Health Clinic, and a HUGE part of the Wine for Women's Health event with the Marian Ramlow Reproductive Health Advocate Award.  This award recognizes a member of our community who has significantly contributed towards promoting the advancement of Essential Health Clinic through leadership and community advocacy.  Previous award recipient, Janet Kusch was there to present Nancy with the award.  (We were able to keep the nomination totally secret, which was a wonderful surprise to all!)
A HUGE thank you to all of our donors for our Wine for Women's Health event as well as support during our National Women's Health Week:

A SHORT REVIEW OF MY FORTY-FOUR YEAR NURSING CAREER

As a new nursing school grad and adrenaline junkie, the world of newborn intensive care was an exciting place to be.  It meant some pick-ups by airplane and ambulance, even an ambulance crash, and without ventilators, it meant hours of “bagging” the babies. I can still feel the squeezing we did to keep those little ones going.

Once I had children of my own, I wasn’t looking for that kind of excitement any more. Doing the work to become the first Childbirth Educator in the state of Iowa who was certified by the International Childbirth Education Association, I began to realize that my nursing perspectives had a lot in common with midwifery.

After several years working in labor and delivery, I had the opportunity to pursue midwifery by studying in San Francisco.  Working with women at San Francisco General Hospital, I experienced a full range of conditions, challenges, nationalities, and needs.  It was a great place to continue my growth and passion of caring for women. I was learning the full meaning of the midwifery tag line: “With Women for a Lifetime”.

Ten years of full-scope midwifery preceded the shift which led me here and into the world of family planning.  Women spend so much more of their lives avoiding pregnancy than they do desiring it.  But family planning is more than the choice to have a child, when and how many.

Access to the full range family planning services regardless of ability to pay is critical for a healthy society!  From the teen who needs long-acting reversible contraception to complete high school and beyond, to the mature woman facing the challenges of being back in the dating scene; from the man who just found out his partner cheated on him, to the woman with an abnormal pap who needs help navigating how to get the care she needs; from the woman with a breast lump and no insurance, to the young person who tried sex and then learned they really aren’t ready yet: all of these people deserve compassionate, competent, confidential and accessible care.  It has been a privilege to work at Essential Clinic with each of our clients, helping to meet their unique needs.

It has been my joy to work with so many who share this passion; staff, board, and volunteers. I will miss you all tremendously.

In retirement I will be one of the “old ladies” at the rallies and protests, continuing to advocate for women, children, the marginalized.  I will also take time to travel with my husband, enjoy my grandkids, and knit and cook.

Sharon Jolivette

Forget the black tie, it’s no formal affair. Just come as you are for that casual flair. We’ll drink and laugh as we all reminisce, it’s a gathering for a friend that will surely be missed.
You are invited!  Please join us at 4:30pm on Tuesday, June 26th at Huck Finn's on the Water where we will be helping our very own, Sharon Jolivette, celebrate her retirement.
Welcome to New Staff!
We are excited to announce another newcomer! With 40+ years of experience, Susan LaPlante, will be making her first appearance as our Quality Assurance Nurse on June 18th. She currently resides in Rolla, MO; however she is eager to return to Wisconsin to be closer to friends and family and of course join our staff.  Stay tuned for more information on Susan in next month’s newsletter!
