THE ANGLOSPHERE, TRADE AND INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

EU Membership Weakens UK's Resolve to Defend Itself

Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP today delivered a speech in Washington DC, USA at the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation.

The speech informed his hosts that a British withdrawal from the political and judicial structures of the EU would be in America’s interests. A post-EU United Kingdom would be able to participate in Europe's Single Market, while free to regain its place at global regulation-setting bodies working closely with the US in building international free trade, worldwide prosperity and a strong Western defence.

Mr Paterson warned his American audience that Juncker’s plan for a European Army would cut across the close relationship between the UK and the US. It would undermine the structure of NATO and weaken the resolve of individual member states to maintain their own militaries.
