The arrival of Parashat Va-et’chanan on Shabbat Nachamu reminds us that effective prayer is best achieved when we take the time to focus and organize our thoughts.

This advice serves us well as we approach the upcoming High Holy Days, a period of preparation and sanctity that launches amidst a series of structured countdowns.

We begin with this week’s entry into the seven haftarot of consolation. These readings from the prophets emphasize God’s compassion and ability to forgive.

The words of the haftorah and the spirit of Shabbat Nachamu are intended to offer us comfort as we spiritually rebuild from the brokenness of Tisha B’av but they also remind us that the time has arrived to begin our personal preparation for the New Year.

In a few weeks, we begin awakening our souls with the calls of the shofar during the month of Elul. I also invite you to open your minds and spirit to the opportunity of the New Year and this can be done by attending one or more of the sessions we are hosting to introduce our new Mishkan T’shuvah or alternatively, by signing up to receive the UPJ’s Elul Reflections.

In addition to our regular programs and services, we have a number of fascinating events that we are proud to partner with this weekend.

Our celebrations on Shabbat begin this Friday with Bubs & Bagels at 10am led by Natalie Stone. A unique program of playtime and music and designed specifically for grandparents, parents and guardians with children aged 0 - 2 years.
Join Patrick Prunster & Beth Riordan for Hineinu at 6pm Friday.

Erev Shabbat is at 6.15pm in the main sanctuary while Shabbat Shacharit begins at 10am.

Marcel Rose celebrates his bar mitzvah at our Minchah service on Saturday at 3pm . We wish the Rose family a huge mazal tov on their simcha!
