St. Michael’s House
St. Michael’s House Spring Ezine - February 2022 | Edition: 1/22
St. Michael’s House welcomes the recent government announcement signalling the end of so many restrictions. After a challenging two years, an atmosphere of hope has emerged. Throughout the pandemic, St. Michael’s House has worked to ensure the best interest of our service users, families and staff. We have worked with the HSE to ensure booster vaccination of our service users and staff, and we will continue to be guided by the best public health advice as we move into the next phase of the pandemic.
While many restrictions are ending, it is important to acknowledge that Covid19 is still in the community and may continue to impact our resources and delivery of service. As we adapt to a new reality our day services continue to reopen. We do have a number of challenges with transportation and we are working closely with the relevant companies in order to support families. We have completed a significant review of our transport routes to maximise efficiency and reduce journey times for service users. We aim to have a full return to services as soon as possible.
I am very proud of the innovation, flexibility and best practice that we have experienced over the past two years. I want to reiterate the gratitude we all feel for the dedication and extraordinary work that continues to be contributed by our staff teams during this time. Our planning and new Strategic Plan Development is reflective of our intention to retain these approaches.
Finally, I would like to thank our service users for their continued adaptability and enthusiasm. Below, you will read some news that captures the spirit and essence of our St. Michael’s House people. It is important during these changing times to pause and celebrate achievements and showcase how St. Michael’s House strives to being person-centered, professional, ethical and innovative.
Thank you to everyone for contributing to this Ezine edition.
Liz Reynolds, CEO - St. Michael’s House
Many of our service users have received their covid booster vaccination in HSE run venues throughout Dublin. Some service users will be offered an additional vaccine if they meet certain criteria. Overall, the booster programme has been a very positive experience. St. Michael’s House worked in partnership with the HSE to ensure that our service users are vaccinated in a timely manner, as part of the community effort and enabling them to continue to live and work safely. Thank you to everyone involved.
St. Michael's House launched a new Deconditioning Resource for all at the first St. Michael's House Staff Infoshare of 2022. Deconditioning is a complex process of physiological changes that affect multiple body systems and often results in functional decline following a period of inactivity.
These resources are available for all our service users, families & staff to access. Link here for more information & exercises to Make Every Move Count!
Led by David Dunne (Director of Operations) and CYP (Children & Young Person’s) Directorate, St. Michael’s House were successful in their application for access to the Health Passport. This will ensure the service users who attend the respite service within the organisation are offered informed access to the Health Passport for People with an Intellectual Disability. The Health Passport is a national initiative funded by the Department of Health and Slaintecare Integration Fund and is accessible to all intellectual disability sectors. The Health Passport will provide healthcare staff with information on an individual’s needs and abilities.
Highlights from St. Michael’s House Service Users
Moyle Road gets Active
Congratulations to our service users in St. Michael's House Moyle Road Day Services who completed a 10-week exercise initiative by Ireland Active.
This exciting initiative encouraged older adults to get back 'Active'. Two groups from Moyle Road took part in a 1hour exercise session each week that worked on Balance, Mobility & Strength. The exercise class was carried out by the St. Michael's House Leisure Centre team. The two groups were very committed and worked hard throughout but mainly had fun and improved greatly on their movements !
Stephanie turns 70!
Congratulations Stephanie from Ratheanna Service who celebrated her 70th birthday. Stephanie enjoyed a party in The Marine Hotel with her friends and music from a St. Michael's House favourite Gerry Long.
Castle Celebrates Africa Day
Service users attending Castle Day Services were delighted to celebrate Africa Day with staff member Funmilayo this January.
Funmilayo, along with ITB student Shilo, educated service users and staff about their traditions, traditional dress, food, climate, flags and countries in Africa. They celebrated with lots of traditional dancing and food.
A great day was had by all. Thank you Funmilayo and Shilo for a fun and educational day!

SMH Disability Network Teams Update
The SMH Disability Network teams have been in operation since September 2021.
Currently all families open to the service have been assigned a key worker as the main point of contact for their team.
Over the next few months, the teams will be focused on putting a plan in place to address the needs of those children and families who are on the waitlist. The waitlists are extensive, so this will take some time.
While they are doing this, the teams will offer new targeted online training interventions that will be available each month to families on the waitlist.

St. Michael’s House Fundraising Team are delighted to present the next event in our very popular Run, Walk, Move Series.
‘Buddy Up’ is an exciting new event for 2022 where our supporters are encouraged pick a 'buddy' and run, walk or move in aid of St. Michael's House.
This is YOUR challenge and YOU decide how you want to reach your goal!
This March our Annual National Campaign celebrates 15 years of encouraging reading for all. Each passing year, the campaign has grown in popularity with up to 200 companies, schools and clubs hosting events around the country and an average of 30,000 book exchanges annually. As we navigate through the next phase of the pandemic, our Bring a Book Buy a Book campaign remains a virtual event. We are hopeful that in 2023 we will see the return of our popular in-person events across businesses, schools and clubs. We are asking all book-lovers to Pass the Book in 2022 and support our Devices Scheme for people with disabilities.
