In 2016, the Welcome Home Coalition was pivotal to passing a $258 million affordable housing bond.
In 2017, its members helped develop the framework for the bond; and the first bond-funded housing is being built in SE Portland.
In 2018, the Coalition envisions a future where everyone has a safe, stable, affordable home and our community takes collective responsibility to eliminate the affordable housing gap.
What's on our 2018 to do list?
1. Inform a possible region-wide ballot measure on affordable housing with Metro.
2. Broaden our education and outreach in Washington and Clackamas Counties with Housing Advocate Happy Hours, business and community forums, listening sessions, social marketing campaigns and engaging with policymakers on potential investment streams for housing and support services.
3. Partner with and support the City of Portland and Multnomah County in finding new funding streams for permanent affordable housing that include funds for safety net services.
As Author and Activist Angela Davis said, "the importance of doing activist work is precisely because it allows you to give back and to consider yourself not as a single individual who may have achieved whatever but to be a part of an ongoing historical movement."
In 2018, we will continue to make history as a community in our work to House the People.
The Welcome Home Coalition is hard at work continuing a movement today to create a tomorrow when all Portland metro residents have access to housing opportunity. Together we can build a prosperous community with smart schools, healthy people and a strong economy where everyone has a home. Together we can Welcome Everyone Home!
