March 25, 2016: Humbled by the Cross

Dear <<First Name>>,

“He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross.” Philippians 2:7, 8, NLT.

The cross is the place of peace. It brings us to Jesus in our true self. This sacred place helps us to realize that we are nothing without Him. Though our selfish pride rejects wisdom and trust in exchange for waywardness and self-reliance, the cross puts all of this to rest. We simply release our nothing and embrace His fulness.

Jesus "made himself" nothing. We don't have that problem. To fully be like us, He came and divested Himself of any glory. Though He is fully God, He was stripped to naked humanity at the cross. And this is where we find ourselves when we join Him there. Broken, naked, dying...dead and free. Now we can start living.

Today, on Good Friday, it is good to meditate upon how we became something. Jesus exchanged all of Himself for us at the cross.

Here is today's reading.
