March 2, 2016: The Biggest Hindrance to Unanswered Prayer
View this email in your browser

Dear <<First Name>>,

Then Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. I assure you that you can say to this mountain, ‘May God lift you up and throw you into the sea,’ and your command will be obeyed. All that’s required is that you really believe and do not doubt in your heart. Listen to me! You can pray for anything, and if you believe, you will have it. But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.” Mark 11:22-25

We all love formulas when it comes to spiritual things. If I do this, the "magic, genie, god" will perform marvelously for me. Just watch... Unfortunately, God is more mysterious than that. He is not a circus elephant waiting to perform, but the Creator and Ruler of everything. Consequently, when we read verses like these, we want to make them all tidy for ourselves.

Instead, I recommend that we look at the parts we can do:

1) Have faith in God.

2) Speak to the mountains of our lives.

3) Really believe.

4) Do not doubt in your heart.

5) Pray.

6) Forgive.

It is this last one that always gets me. While I am busy having faith and asking the Lord to change my life and circumstances, the Lord is asking me to repair my relationships. While I am saying, "Lord, do this," He is answering me by saying, "forgive."

God's grace and forgiveness is the central theme of the gospel. This is what it means to be a Christian. It has less to do with moving mountains, and exercising our awesomeness and more on being the lovers God has called us to be.

The greatest hindrance to our prayers is unforgiveness. Even if we obtain our desires, we are missing the most important piece of life... loving each other.
