February 23, 2016: Missing the Miracle

Dear <<First Name>>,

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. Mark 6:50b-52

There are so many lessons in this chapter of Mark for me, that it was difficult to write about only one. On the top of the list was this statement, "their hearts were hardened." To catch you up, Jesus had just fed 8-10,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. You would think with every basket being served, the disciples would be saying, "wow, it's a miracle." Maybe they had seen Jesus do so many things that a miracle of this proportion was simply "ho-hum."

So now He appears to be "walking past the boat" they were taking to the other side of the lake. He wasn't trying to hitch a ride, but simply walking along... on the water. They freak out, Jesus calms them and then this statement appears..."They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened."

Is it possible to see Jesus do incredible things in our lives over many days, weeks, and years and still have our hearts hardened? Of course. They missed the miracle. Their walk with Jesus, even though He was doing incredible things was simply stale. So what do we do in these times?

1) Let's repent that our awe of Jesus has waned. We are unexpectant, complacent, and even bored with our walk. The adventure has become "same 'ol, same 'ol." We are not designed to live this way. Let's confess it and ask the Lord's grace on us.

2) Ask the Lord for awareness. We will see what we are looking for. If we look for the Lord's hand in our lives, we will see it and thank Him for it each and every day. The miracles are there, we just don't see them.

3) Stay in amazement of the Lord. Each sunrise, baby, smile, touch, is a miracle of Abba's handiwork, and a gift to our lives.

Let's guard our hearts from the inevitable hardness that comes even as we walk closely with Jesus. Each day is a miracle. Let's understand about the loaves...
