“Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said. And they *sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any.” Matthew 22:15, 16, NAS95.
During the passion week, Jesus entered into many conversations that were meant to trap Him. The Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees, and the lawyers all joined together in the sport of the day... "Let's trap Jesus."
They came at Him with political, religious, theological, and "spiritual" questions to see if He would trip up on His own words. As seen above, they even resorted to flattery and catering to pride in an attempt for Jesus to give them what they wanted. Unfortunately for them, Jesus was able to show them where their heart really was.
As I contemplated this, I had to ask myself how many times I have "asked" the Lord questions that were aimed at proving myself right. How many times have I tried to trap Him to justify myself?
We have all tried to use Jesus at one time or another to get what we wanted. We have all leaned into His grace to try to insure ourselves a more comfortable life. We all know what it is like to try to "trap Jesus" and use Him to our personal advantage.
All the plotting, the alliances, the worldly wants and wisdom put together could not get Jesus to give in to their purposes. He won't do that for us either. Let's beware that our heart is not set on trapping Jesus to do our will. Instead, let's venerate Him for who He is and tell Him we are through with our traps.
Have a great day!
