A new week, reader—hello again from Composure

Setting out to create three-dimensional “drawings in space,” early 20th century artist Alexander Calder experimented with, twisted, and sculpted wire into what we now think of as a "mobile." (A term, by the way, coined by Marcel Duchamp in 1931 in an attempt to describe the strange confluence of balance, movement, and grace.)

From the Helsinki Design Lab and their take on how to bring ideas to life: "Design is the task of stewarding ideas into life in the real world, where solutions do not always allow themselves to be politely engineered. Contending with the forces of nature and humanity is to balance constraints towards finding effective compromises."

And this poignant observation from Tip For Tat: "For every piece of advice there is an equal and opposite piece of advice, and some jerk who will quote it as fact."

[captions read: "A penny saved is a penny earned" | "You have to spend money to make money"]

As part of my own practice in finding a rare balance among many & varied contradictory forces, each Composure scarf is made and worn to reflect on the stories of people in my life with perspectives worth embodying. Scarves and stories at alwayscomposure.com

In patient anticipation of equal and opposite advice—

A brief note: In the coming weeks I'll be asking some of you about things I can share with the growing audience here. Upcoming themes include "collaboration," "empathy," and "diligence"—should anything spark in your mind at least a loose connection with any of these ideas, simply reply to this email or send something to studstill@alwayscomposure.com and I'll work it in.
