The Centerian is the Teaching & Learning Center's monthly newsletter. It's delivered to in-boxes across Academic Affairs and is designed to connect faculty and staff to TLC-sponsored activities and events; it also recommends useful academic resources and teaching strategies through a variety of social media.

March 7: CSC Online-Sakai Turns 10!

CSC-Online Sakai will be offline on March 7 to upgrade the LMS to version 10.5. The upgrade will improve performance but change little in terms of the user interface. [Read more.]
A Brief History of Videoconferencing

Videoconferencing isn't just one of Jereme Patterson's specialties, it's one of his passions. The TLC's IT Analyst makes the point that videoconferencing is not only an important tool for CSC administrators, but it's an amazing way to bridge the distance between faculty and students. CSC has a rich videoconferencing history and, as Patterson notes, the technology -- from ITV rooms to mobile devices -- has come a long way since CSC began to utilize it in the early 1990s. [Read more.]
TLC Represents at the Info Fair

In February, the whole gang -- Sam Ballard, IT Specialist; Jereme Patterson, IT Analyst; Elizabeth Ledbetter, ID Specialist; and Alex Graham, the TLC's GA -- turned out for CSC's annual Information Fair. The purpose of the Fair is to introduce units (departments, divisions, committees) from across campus to faculty and staff, so that people have a clearer idea of the resources and services that are available. [Read more.]
Reach Out and Touch Something

It's not too late to sign up for this month's object-oriented learning workshop provided by Sandoz Center Director, Sarah Polak. The workshop includes two 1.5 hours sessions: Session 1 meets Tuesday, March 15, 3-4:30 pm in ADM 030, and Session 2 meets Tuesday, March 22, 3-4:30 pm in the Sandoz CenterParticipants completing the workshop will exit with a plan for better utilizing the Center. How to Include Your Colleagues

Looking for ways to be more inclusive? Then you may find IT Specialist Sam Ballard's latest blog post of interest. Ballard is engaged in outreach designed to improve instructor utilization of CSC's LMS, Sakai. Subscribing to the philosophy that it is better to teach instructors to fish for a lifetime than to supply them with fish du jour, the TLC will be increasingly proactive with training and tip sheets, so that faculty feel more comfortable with and confident in e-learning technologies. Sakai Update Primer this Week

This week, the TLC offers two short presentations on the Sakai upgrade to version 10.5. Presentations on Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2 will be held in the Library Learning Commons, Room 111, from 3:30 to 4 pm. [Read more.]
Summer Institute for CSC Faculty

The TLC continues to gauge faculty interest in a Summer Institute, to be held tentatively in August 2016. Participants would be exposed to instructional design and e-pedagogy best practices. If interested, contact [Read more.]
