Trail Extension News

Still no new news from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) on their plan to buy approximately 100 miles of railroad corridor from CSX.  The FDOT purchase would include the section that would be The Legacy Trail extension.    At present, all county negotiations with CSX are on hold until we find out what the state is going to do.  Click here to read the complete statement released by the county.

OJT Visitor Center Project

FLT members Jerry Droll, David Zimmerman and Mark Malkasian have volunteered to work with Chuck Butterfield on the first phase of this project – developing a plan to remodel the house at Osprey Junction Trailhead Park into a Visitor Center (map), (OJT trailhead may be more familiar to you as the location of Red Rider sculpture and the water fountain). FLT has agreed to fund the development of a plan for review and approval by the County Parks Department. Proposals from architects to help develop a plan are now being requested for review.
Updated Architectural Renderings for Bridge Over Laurel Road

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has provided the county with updated design concept renderings (shown here).  The new design includes a color change from the previous version and incorporates proposed signage which was developed with input from FLT and the community.  FDOT will be making a presentation to the county commissioners about this project to provide an update on December 8th, 2015.

Thanks to Patrick Lui, Sarasota County Bicycle, Pedestrian and Trails Coordinator, for providing this information.

Membership Renewal Time
We recently switched from calendar year memberships to annual memberships from the date of payment. Many current members are 2015 calendar year members whose memberships will expire at the end of the year.

If it's renewal time for your membership, you will soon be getting a reminder email.  This email is special because it makes it very easy to renew -- click the link in your email, select membership type, and enter your credit card information.  That's it, no login required.

Renewals may also be done online on our website or membership forms may be printed from our website and mailed in. Individual dues are $15 year and Family dues are $20 year. Also see our website for member discounts at local businesses. In addition, member volunteers may purchase FLT logo merchandise at cost.

Florida Has 3 New Bicycle Friendly Communities!
The League of American Bicyclists has announced  three newly-recognized Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC)  in Florida - Cape Coral, Naples, and Winter Park.  Florida now has 19 Bicycle Friendly Communities.  Our own Venice, FL was designated "Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community"  in October of 2012, thanks to volunteers Monty Andrews and Steve Christian.  They worked with Community Development Director Chad Minor for about three years to make biking safer and more comfortable in Venice.

"As biking has become more and more popular, more and more communities are committed to creating safer places to bike," said Alex Doty, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. "Winning a Bicycle Friendly Community designation shows a community's dedication to creating safer and better places to ride your bike."

Explore the Bicycle Friendly Communities (and businesses and universities) in your state using the online award database.  To learn more about the criteria to become a Bike Friendly Community, go to bikeleague.org/community.
County Mobility Plan Fees

Sarasota County Staff Graphic / Jonathan B. Paul
Sarasota County has changed the way it collects and distributes impact fees. A transition to Mobility Fees will begin in January 2016. These fees are to be used for transit, bike lanes, trails, sidewalks, roundabouts, etc to create complete streets. The County is updating the comprehensive plan to include alternate transportation and encourage mixed use vs. suburban sprawl. Mobility Fee Funds are identified in a 5 year capital improvement plan. FLT plans to monitor and recommend how the funds will be spent.
Everglades Bike Ride
Friends of River of Grass Greenway and Friends of Fakahatchee are sponsoring this fundraising event Sunday March 13, 2016 at Everglades City. It includes a 62 mile and 16 mile on-road bike ride, and a 27 mile off-pavement bike ride. For more information go to www.evergladesROGG.org.
Information Kiosk Update
Work continues on the information kiosk building project funded by FLT and managed by Bruce Dillon. Three additional kiosks are in various stages of completion at Venice Depot Trailhead, Riverview Park Trailhead and Culverhouse Nature Park Trailhead. The new kiosks will have maps, safety and etiquette information and trail information/events posted on them with locked covers.
