February 2017
...and not quite off the ball!

Note from the Chairman

Dear Members,

It has been delightful for me, the BPF CEO and the BPF Team to meet with so many of you at our events throughout these past couple of months. We would like to start off by saying a big thank you for making our BPFSocial! Professional Networking event, Young Professional Programme events and the Pakistan Awareness Week Festival events such a success! As always, it was wonderful to see our old members and the faces of so many new ones. This is just the kind of energy and support we are looking for from our community and we look to your continued support to ensure that our mentoring, professional development & networking and arts & cultural events are beneficial, and fun at the same time, for all of you. We hope this momentum continues throughout the year!

Under our Young Professionals Programme, we partnered with 16 university Pakistan Societies under the Pakistani Foundation and the World Congress of Overseas Pakistanis (WCOP) to sponsor the week-long Pakistan Awareness Week (PAW) Festival with the aim of empowering British Pakistani students and building a positive image of Pakistan and British Pakistanis through a celebration of its culture. The week-long events under this festival covered everything from flash mobs and movie premieres to a mesmerising qawwali night and a conference to inspire the young leaders of tomorrow – hats off to everyone involved for making it such a success!

This year we have been focusing more on providing internships, work placements and job opportunities in addition to our mentoring programme for our members as we feel this plays a vital role in empowering the British Pakistani community, since 1 in 5 British Pakistanis are still unemployed or under-employed in the UK. In this regard, please do get in touch with our office at info@bpfuk.org both if you are looking for an internship / work placement / job or equally if you are offering such opportunities in any industry sector.

We look forward to seeing you all throughout the year at our various events that we have carefully curated for you and we hope they are as well received as they have been so far! We look forward to seeing you at the "Pakistan as a Digital Powerhouse" Conference, "Sajjad Ali" Concert and "Inside Out Wellbeing" Seminar in March, the "BPFSocial!" Professional Networking event in April and the "Focus on Law" Panel Discussion in May.

Our members' feedback is highly valued and we would like to see greater engagement from our members on all our social media under our weekly topics for discussion dealing with the various issues facing the British Pakistani community in the UK. We also need support from our community to continue with our valuable work for the community and are always looking for donors / sponsors since we are a registered charity (charity no: 113770) in the UK. If you would like to donate to BPF or sponsor one of our events, please do email our office at info@bpfuk.org.

Finally, we would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the bomb blasts that took place in Pakistan. May God bless them and bring peace and stability to the entire region. Amen.

All the best,
Asif Rangoonwala

Dara: Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Dara is the first Pakistani play to have been adapted and staged by the National Theatre. In 2015, Dara was seen by more than 30,000 people over 36 performances in London. It was recently brought back for a one-time free screening and panel discussion on February 20th at the Nelson Mandela Auditorium Sheffield Students' Union. Dara is a portrayal of the seventeenth-century Moghul royal Shah Jahan's family and addresses historic debates around religious freedom and practice. It stimulated much public discussion on issues of culture, history, sufism and religious tolerance. In response to the hugely positive press and audience reception, the National Theatre made a film of the full live performance, for cultural, educational and arts festival screenings. After the screening, there was a Q&A session where SIIBS Honorary Professor Adam Dinham, Dr Anna Piela and Dara co-producer Anwar Akhtar answered questions and discussed the implications of this play for contemporary society.

Honorary

Outstanding

British

Pakistani

 of the

Month - Sajjad Ali

"...do less work but ensure it is quality work that you are producing..."

Our honorary Outstanding British Pakistani of the Month is, non other than, our very own - Sajjad Ali! One of the pioneers of our Pakistani music industry and a well-known household name, he is coming back to London after 10 years to perform at Cadogan Hall on 22nd March! Following the success of his latest song Tamasha, with renowned rapper Bohemia, we caught up with Ali for a brief chat.

Follow him on Twitter @sajjad_official

What changes do you see in upcoming artists today compared to artists when you first started in 1979?

From when I first started in the music industry to now a lot has changed. Over the years, many artists have entered the industry and the industry is now moving very quickly which is all a reflection of the times.

If you could collaborate with any artist (past or present) who would it be and why?

My most recent release, ‘Tamasha’ is a collaboration with world-famous rapper, Bohemia, who is very popular and has been very well received by everyone.

Collaborating with other artists often depends on the song, lyrics, concept, music and the current project that you are working on but definitely in the future, if there is an opportunity like ‘Tamasha’, I would like to work with more artists.

Who was (or were) your mentors when you started out and who do you look up to today?

As everyone knows, I come from a musical family that started with Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan. I trained in music from my father who was also my inspiration. Today, there are many good artists but the difference from when I was learning music to now is astronomical.

Looking back now at your journey, what is the best advice you could give yourself when you first started out?

The best advice I can give is to work hard as hard work always pays off and never compromise on quality – do less work but ensure it is quality work that you are producing.

What future projects can we look forward to by you in music, TV or film?

Just like ‘Tamasha’, in the future, I plan to continue to make quality compositions that connect with people and many more songs will be releasing very soon.
