MENTORING - CONNECTING - GROWING
The Power in Your Network

Hello Valued Women Give San Diego Members:

Please join us on Thursday, October 20 at 6:00PM for a night celebrating mentorship. Whether you are just starting out in your career, are a seasoned pro, or even retired, mentorship and building relationships can be beneficial in every stage of life. There are times in our lives when we seek input and feedback from others who have life experience! And there are times in our lives when we can share our experiential wisdom with others eager to listen.

For working women, barriers limiting advancement can be daunting: lack of role models, lack of access to informal networks where connections are made, and work/life balance. And, women in the later stages of life can learn a lot from our younger friends!

We will begin with a panel discussion, facilitated by WGSD co-founder Gayle Tauber. Panelists include former California State Senator, Lucy Killea; Executive Director of Kitchens for Good, Jennifer Gilmore; and Membership and Events Manager for Voice of San Diego, Christina Shih. Then we will break into groups to share successes and challenges through facilitated conversation, all the while, learning from one another.

Your contribution is important. Please don't miss this special night of mentorship! Please RSVP HERE.

Thursday, October 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Girl Scouts, 1231 Upas Street, San Diego 92103

Looking forward to seeing you!

Community Engagement Team: Career Workshop
San Diego Youth Services, STARS Program
On Wednesday, October 5th, the Community Engagement Team gathered Women Give San Diego volunteers and other community volunteers to organize a Career Workshop for the STARS Program at San Diego Youth Services, a former WGSD grantee. STARS (Surviving Together, Achieving and Reaching for Success), is a program for girls between the ages of 12-24 involved with commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. STARS provides support to empower youth to escape sexual exploitation by developing their inner strength, building a sense of community and supporting their reintegration into mainstream society. At the WGSD Career Workshop, 15 STARS program participants rotated between stations like Resume Review, Mock Interviews, Interview Dress, and Careers.  At Careers, the volunteers represented careers as diverse as scientist, social worker, lawyer, doctor, and teacher. The girls were very excited to learn more about career paths that they might be able to take, and there were wonderful and inspiring conversations taking place at all of the different stations. Girls who got a mini passport stamped at all four stations were entered into a raffle to win prizes, including zoo tickets and gift cards! The Community Engagement Team thanks all of the volunteers who made the event so special for the STARS program participants.

Our Grant Cycle Has Begun- Help Us Spread the Word!

The Grants Team has officially kicked off the 2017 grants cycle! The first step of the process is for nonprofit agencies to submit a very brief interest form on our online portal . We are looking to fund organizations that support women and girls' economic security and sustainability. If you know an organization that may be a good fit, please encourage them to submit. Forms are due December 16th and more information can be found on our website here.
Join Our Team!
Want to help distribute resources in our community? Our Grants Team serves a critical role in our mission by driving a process to select nonprofit organizations to receive grant funding for the valuable work they are doing supporting women and girls' economic self-sufficiency. The Grant Team meets three times per grant cycle to complete the annual process.  Each Grant Team member reads and reviews the applications, culminating in Team vetting of select organizations. Depending on availability,  members are matched in small groups to conduct site visits. The final slate of awardees is determined after robust Team discussion. Serving on the Grants Team is a great way to connect with other members and make an impact! For more information or to join, contact Amy Bernal by December 16th.
