Greetings WGSD Members!

I hope all is well with you!  2015 is off to a great start for Women Give San Diego! And, that is largely because our teams have been very active. I am continuously impressed with the enthusiasm, energy, and individual and collective wisdom of our members! Thank you for making Women Give San Diego so special!

We started January with a fun party at Rosanne Holliday's beautiful home.  Special thanks to Dr. Jenn Gunsaullus for her informative and spirited Game of Passion, to Rosanne for being such a gracious hostess and to our Events team for their expert coordination!

Please save the date for our March 23rd meeting! The topic is: It Takes a Village. We will hear from three of our grantees, Women's Resource Center, Community Housing Works and Southwestern College Microenterprise Family Childcare Program about how their continuum of services help women move from crisis to empowerment and employment. DeDe Alpert, former State Senator, has graciously agreed to facilitate the panel. We are in the process of confirming the speakers. The meeting will be held at the Sharp Corporate Office, 8520 Tech Way, San Diego, 92123 at 5:30pm. More information will be forthcoming. A special thanks to our Education Team for planning this program.

We are also planning a special 5th Annual Grants Celebration for the week of May 11, 2015. This year, because of your extraordinary support, we will be granting $100,000 to several worthy organizations. A special thanks to our Grants Team, which is "in process" now. We will send you more information as soon as we secure a location.

And, tickets are still available for the February 9th 5:00pm showing of The Cancer Mirror, Sophie Tuttleman's award winning documentary about our co-founder, Jan Tuttleman's battle with cancer.  For more information about this powerful movie about Jan, please click HERE.  If you are interested in attending, you may purchase a ticket through the Center for Jewish Culture website by clicking HERE.

Thank you!

WGSD General Meeting: "A Game of Passion"
WGSD had its first meeting of 2015 with an entertaining Game of Passion theme. At the home of Rosanne Holliday, Women Give members celebrated another year of successful grantmaking and shared riotous laughter with Dr. Jenn Gunsaullus and her educational game show.
Dr. Jenn facilitated the game show with four WGSD contestants, who answered questions about sexual health and female sexuality research in a welcoming and entertaining environment. The entire audience was involved, calling out answers to help the contestants. After the winners were announced, Dr. Jenn fielded audience questions as a lively discussion continued throughout the evening surrounding sexual issues, gender, and age. As usual, it was a fun, educational, and lively meeting with our members and guests. The Cancer Mirror

On February 9th, many of us will be honoring our late friend and WGSD co-founder, Jan Tuttleman, by attending The Cancer Mirror. The film was created by Jan's daughter, Sophie Tuttleman, a talented and award winning local filmmaker. The take away from this film, according to Sophie is the “irrepressible spirit” of her mom and the idea that The Cancer Mirror can open conversations about life.  For the full story on the making of the film, please click HERE.
Communications Update
The Communications Team is committed to creating a consistent and efficient communication strategy for Women Give in 2015. If you have any blog topic ideas or stories about the impact of WGSD's work in the community, please let us know! Also, if you would like to volunteer a bit of time and talent doing graphic design in Wordpress for our website, please contact Jenn Gunsaullus at
Grants Team Update
The Grants Team is in full proposal-review mode. Our teams are reviewing the 9 full proposals we received in January.  Full proposals equip the Grants Team with essential information about the applicant, including its financial history, its affiliations and collaborations, and its overall priorities. After thoughtful review of programs and finances, we will schedule site visits. Look for our grant selection recommendation to the general membership at the end of March.
The Benefits of Membership
One of the many benefits of Women Give San Diego membership is being able to attend San Diego Grantmakers' meetings and programs as a "member" of San Diego Grantmakers.  San Diego Grantmakers helps leverage local philanthropy to help bring more resources to our region. Visit their website to learn more about this great opportunity!

Community Engagement

Thank you to all who contributed to the Diaper Drive at our Holiday Party! Your generosity provided a carload of diapers for the women and children served by Catholic Charities. Dr. Patty Petterson
expressed her gratitude and shared: "Most people would find it hard to believe that every day there are women in such financial straits that they are literally unable to change their babies’ diapers regularly because they have no money to purchase new ones."

UNODC: Global Report

The UNODC Global Report 2014 is the second of its kind mandated by the General Assembly. It covers 128 countries and provides an overview of patterns and flows of trafficking in person at global, regional and national levels. Trafficking in persons is a truly global phenomenon: between 2010 and 2012, victims from at least 153 countries were detected in 124 countries worldwide. A great majority of the victims detected are females.
