A Message from our Co-Presidents

Dear WGSD Members,

It was a pleasure seeing those of you who attended the membership meeting this week. How empowering it was to learn how we can enhance our impact through advocacy! Thank you to the Advocacy Leadership Team for coordinating such an insightful meeting.
Some of the greatest impact we make as WGSD members is through our grant making. Our Grants Leadership Team is launching into their rigorous process to select the organizations that we will support this coming year. We were able to grant $100,000 in our last grant-making cycle, and we hope to do the same again. That level of community support is only possible through your generosity, not only through your membership, but also with additional contributions you are able to make. Thank you to those of you who have already gone above and beyond, and thank you in advance to those of you planning to make an additional gift to help us ensure we can continue to grant at that same meaningful level.
We also greatly value learning from each other, and our Mentorship Leadership Team is planning an October event that will allow us to continue to learn about and from our fellow members. Please mark your calendars for our October 20th meeting – additional details about the event are below. This particular membership meeting is a perfect forum to showcase what is unique and special about WGSD, so please bring a few friends who may be interested in joining WGSD.
In addition to our educational membership meetings, we have an upcoming opportunity for you to give back using your time and talents. We hope you can join us at our October 5th Community Engagement event with our STARS grantee. We will be hosting a career workshop. Please take a look at the event overview and let us know if you are interested in volunteering.
We are off to a great and busy fall! Thank you to all of you for all you do for WGSD and the women and girls in San Diego.

An Evening of Advocacy
On Monday, September 19th, Marj Pumb, the Director of the Women's Policy Institute (WPI) of the Women's Foundation of California, traveled to San Diego to provide a WPI To-Go training. Nearly 40 members and guests of Women Give San Diego and The Lawyer's Club attended this event and learned about how California legislation works, how to create a bill, and how to navigate the network of legislators, legislative counsel, and Assembly and Senate Committees. While many people understand how the law works, becoming empowered to navigate it and deliver policy change within the state of California is not a simple task. WGSD members as well as other community members are now equipped with the information they need to begin pursuing legislative change if they haven't already begun to do so. WGSD hopes to continue exploring how to engage its members with policies, whether they exist or need to be created, so that they can work together to create systemic change to improve opportunities to live with self-sufficiency and security. A warm thanks to Marj Plumb, as well as other staff of the Women's Foundation of California, Elizabeth Ayala and Rhiannon Rossi, for a wonderful evening.

WGSD Team Updates
In an effort to maintain continuity and be mindful of busy work schedules, the
Grants Team has added a third co-chair for the 2016/2017 grants cycle. We are pleased to announce that Krista Stellmacher will be lending her expertise and assisting with co-chair duties. Krista was essential to the success and planning for last year’s grants celebration and Amy and Marcia are delighted she has agreed to take on a leadership role. The grants team plans to have its initial meeting early in the new year. We hope to welcome back previous team members and encourage any potential new members to reach out to Amy Bernal so they may be added to the grants team roster and notified of future meetings.

The next Community Engagement Team meeting will be Monday, September 26th at 5:30PM. Please email Courtney Brown or Suzanne Marczak if you are interested in joining.

The Education Team is looking for members to join their team. For more information about the Education Team or to join, please contact Lenise Andrade or Andrea Rose.

We are happy to welcome five new members to Women Give San Diego:

Amanda Estrada
Marcail MacEwan
Maia Mercer
Jamie Shafir
Nicole Villanueva

Do you know someone who would be a good addition to WGSD? Consider bringing them to the upcoming meeting, hosted by the Mentorship Team on Thursday October 20th.
Community Events & News
Former Women Give San Diego grantee Just in Time for Foster Youth was recently featured in this article in the Del Mar times. Community Member Dr. Sherri Muchnick and her friends have become "aunties" for Lahana Velez as she navigates the beginning of her career.

“I’m a big believer that people have more strengths and more abilities than they realize, she added. If they can get some support and some direction, people do amazing things. So having the opportunity to work with young people and do that has been pretty amazing."

Sisterhood Circle Tea Party
Former Women Give San Diego grantee, United Women of East Africa, is hosting a special "Sisterhood Circle Tea Party" for their Girl Scouts troop on October 3rd, 2016 from 5:30PM- 7:30PM. All donations will go directly to supporting the troop in "building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place." Suggested donations: $25 for adults and $10 for youth.
Please email Bethlehem for any questions or call (858) 231-1248.
Casa Cornelia Law Center
Casa Cornelia Law Center is a former grantee of Women Give San Diego.  Casa Cornelia provides quality legal services to indigent victims of human and civil rights violations, including abused and abandoned children, asylum seekers fleeing persecution, and victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.  Women Give funded the Domestic Violence Program, which offers a path to hope and self-sufficiency for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Casa Cornelia will be hosting its Ninth Annual La Mancha Awards on Thursday, October 13 from 6pm - 8pm at the Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego.  At this event, Casa Cornelia honors the many pro bono attorneys, volunteer interpreters and translators, and other community supporters who make this work on behalf of victims of human and civil rights violations possible.
