In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, let’s reflect on how we can raise healthy, happy, and confident girls into womanhood.

Parents, teachers, coaches, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, it’s time to show up for the girls in your lives!

This month, and every month, let’s help encourage a love of movement among girls. Statistics show that girls aren’t as physically active as boys, but there are ways to change this. Teach them that it’s not about how fast or how far you can run or if you can throw a ball—instead, what’s important is having fun while moving. Expose them to different sports and activities so they realize that there are countless ways to enjoy moving.

Parents, this video will give you goosebumps, and it may even inspire you to get a skateboard for your kids. Or get back on the board yourself! Watch as these Afghan girls strap on helmets and knee pads, then careen up and down ramps, sometimes tumbling over but getting up again with a smile on their face. Beyond creativity, skateboarding builds confidence, balance, and strength, and it’s a lot of fun.

Girls' participation in sport

According to a report the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity released in 2016, the top three organized sports that Canadian girls participate in are swimming, dance, and soccer.
