- Naw Moo Ra Soe -

Staff Profile

Naw Moo Ra Soe is the newest member of the Global Alms Incorporated team. Moo Ra is a 22 year old feisty force to be reckoned with! She has a huge heart for helping people and a bubbly personality that encourages everyone to smile.

Moo Ra came to us initially as a short term volunteer and after a very successful two months is now working through our Staff Trainee Program.  Another sewing sensation, Moo Ra has completed all of her Sewing training with Ruth and is now learning how to teach the Vocational Training classes (Sewing Workshop, Language and Computers).

We are all delighted to have Moo Ra join the Global Alms Team. If you would like to contribute towards supporting Naw Moo Ra Soe in her work with us please contact us at

- Dress A Girl -

Community Development

A young girl in Persia with a huge heart wants to help girls around the world who cannot afford to buy clothes. Her idea is simple; to have dresses made, so we can “Dress A Girl”.

*Our little friend from Persia, does not want her name mentioned for privacy reasons, so we are going to call her Fedora, which means ‘God’s Present’.

Many young girls around the world, including Fedora, come from or now find themselves in poor communities. Fedora wants to give back and help people in need, just like when she was young and people helped her. One simple way Fedora can help, is to provide x1 dress for each girl from a poor family. Now that is a lot of young girls, but you need to start somewhere right? So Fedora has chosen to start helping young girls here, in Mae Sot.

Fedora has asked Global Alms Inc. and Shwe Zin Designs to partner with her in this project. Not only does this help young girls in need by providing them with a beautiful dress to wear, it also helps a young woman run her own small sewing business. This guarantees that each girl receives a good quality and well made dress that will last.

Please ask yourself ‘How can I help?’ If you have a generous heart and want to help clothe some young girls in need, then this project is definitely perfect for you. You do not have to be wealthy; even just a few dollars will help. Each dress costs around $15AUD to make and pass on. This is the same price of x2 coffee’s and a piece of cake.

You may be in a sewing class or have one at your child’s school that could run a small fundraiser by either donating funds, donating supplies or even by donating dresses they have made. You may know some friends that love to sew, who could make some dresses and send them to us. Please contact us at if you would like help us partner with Fedora to “Dress A Girl”.

- Staff Housing -

We now has a small 2 bedroom Unit that provides housing for Global Alms Staff and a partner Non-Government Organisation we work alongside. Throughout the year, one of our partner organisations comes to train us in Reality Based Self Defence and conduct other work while they are here. Having accommodation in the area meets a critical need for them and also allows us to work a lot closely with the team.

We have a very generous sponsor covering the rent for 1 year and a small collective of people who have contributed to buying things like a fridge, queen bed + mattress (main bedroom), pantry, a small air conditioner (main bedroom), a cane lounge; including several smaller items such as, kitchen supplies, curtains and towels. We have also been able to carry over several items we still have from the Global Alms Safe House we had set up 4 years ago.
To cater for the whole team we still need the following items:
2 single beds + matresses (second bedroom)
1 small air conditioner (second bedroom)
1 dining table + chairs
2 sets of queen sheets + 4 sets single sheets

We are doing our best to find second hand items and some items have also been donated from members within our own team. If you or a friend would like to take on a small project and raise some assistance to purchase these items we would be most grateful. Please email us at for more information.

- Modern Defensive Tactics Australia -

In April we had a team from Modern Defensive Tactics Australia come to Mae Sot for 1 week and participate in an Operational Training Camp. These guys worked extremely hard with 0700h Tactical Fitness and Combative sessions every day. The program was full on with Situational Awareness training, Batons training, Navigation and Negotiation, Tactical Scenarios, Air Soft/Fire Arms training and Reality Based Self Defence.

It was during the Modern Defensive Tactics Australia Operational Training Camp that Mechelle and Ruth were presented with their formal qualification for Grading as Certified and Registered Modern Defensive Tactics Australia Specialist NGO/RBSD Instructors.
“MDTA – NGO/RBSD Instructor – Level 1
Certified in: Female Personal Protection – Female Ground Defence – Basic Third Party Protection.
This certification is authorised based on the techniques required for specified environments within Thailand and Burma”
This was an incredible honor and surprised both Mechelle and Ruth. They have been training hard for the last 4 years in the Modern Defensive Tactics systems and working their way through the MDTA Instructor program. Both Mechelle and Ruth are the first in the world to receive this qualification which is recognised under a World Combat Association approved syllabus. A huge thank you to Karl Thornton for investing so much time and effort into training our team on the ground.

- Who We Train -

Protection Programs

So far this year we have trained many students from all sorts of backgrounds and with varying challenges. Our team now trains hearing impaired, sight impaired and physically impaired (amputees) students in our Protection Programs. As we are on the Thai/Burma border we constantly come across young people who have been through hell (victims or rape, sexual abuse, beatings, trafficking, domestic violence; the list goes on) and are seeking the knowledge and skills to defend themselves.

- National Children At Risk Training -
