United Savings:
A Legacy of Serving Steel Workers
We’re excited the share the latest story in our legacy video series! Learn more about the history of United Savings Federal Credit Union in Pittsburg, California by watching this short video. United Savings merged into Self-Help Federal in June, 2010.

Chartered in 1935, the credit union was originally named Columbia Steel Employees Credit Union because of its connection to the Columbia Steel Mill. It was founded by Tom Becker, an employee in the Production Planning Office at the mill, in conjunction with a group of other employees who wanted to provide affordable financial services to the mill workers. Over the years it expanded its services to reach members of the community outside of the steel mill, merged with two other credit unions, and changed its name to United Savings Federal Credit Union.

In the video, we interview people who have been members of the credit union for over 40 years and learn from a former CEO about how the credit union supported workers during tough economic times. The video includes a mix of contemporary and archival photos, and inspiring stories from people who consider the credit union “like family.”
Celebrating 40 Years!
Thanks for Joining Us on the Journey
On February 4, 1980, Self-Help started as the Center for Community Self-Help.  Since then, with support from our members and partners, we have spent every day fighting for greater economic opportunity.

From one of our earliest ventures—raising $77 in a bake sale organized by workers we assisted in New Bern, North Carolina – we have remained committed to helping families and entrepreneurs build wealth and financial security.  We will be celebrating this anniversary all year long, as well as the legacies of the credit unions we have merged with along the way.

To kick off this celebration, our branches hosted a Member Appreciation Day on February 14.  See some photos here and below.

The years have gone by quickly, and we are only just beginning as our mission remains more important than ever. Thanks to you for making our work possible for the past four decades!
The Fight Against Hunger

Congratulations and thanks go out to our members, partners and staff at our Second Federal branches in Chicago who are kicking off their fifth Annual Food Drive, in partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository.  In 2019 the Second Federal branches collected a total of 2,603 pounds of food, bringing their total 5-year contributions to 7,200 pounds of food, or 3.61 tons!
Currently, more than 11 million children in the United States live in food-insecure households, and every community in the country is home to families who struggle with food insecurity.  Want to join us in the fight against hunger? Enter your zip code here to find a food bank near you, or visit your local Self-Help Federal branch to see how you can participate.  Every little bit helps!
