February, 2017 Newsletter
Snow on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as seen from Mesa Prieta
Welcome to Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project's first newsletter for 2017.  We have many exciting events in store this year. Two we'd like to share with you right away so you can add them to your calendar are:

Sunday, July 23rd, 2017, a musical event featuring well-known Santa Fe singer Nacha Mendez.  The event will be on Sunday, July 23rd at the Scottish Rite Temple in Santa Fe. There will be food and drink for guests to enjoy, as well as a fabulous silent auction.  We will post more info on our website soon.

Sunday, October 22nd, 2017, our 9th annual Flute Player Tour on the Wells Petroglyph Preserve. Guests will see up to 25 images of flute player petroglyphs on the trails, enjoy the music of Taos Pueblo flute player Patrick Mirabal and have lunch accompanied by fine wines on the Wells home portal. We will let you know as soon as tickets go on sale.
2017 Pláticas Lecture Series
Our 2017 Pláticas lecture series will begin on March 28th at 6:30 PM. Our speaker will be Mark MacKenzie, Chief Conservator for the Museums of New Mexico, talking about scientific imaging of the Segesser Hide Paintings at the Palace of the Governor in Santa Fe

This year our series will be held at the National Heritage Center (formerly called the Oñate Center) on the east side SR 68 in Alcalde.
Wence & Sandra Martinez Trunk Show
On Saturday, March 4th, one of our good friends and local community organizations, the Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center, is holding a trunk show and talk by Wence and Sandra Martinez.  More information is available on the EVFAC website.
Tours, Tours, Tours
With spring weather just around the corner Mesa Prieta will once again be the site of many tours, both public and private. Dates for spring public tours are listed on our website. It's the perfect opportunity to get out and learn more about New Mexico history. If the public tours don't fit your schedule consider booking a private tour for your family or friends.
Petroglyph of the Month
Our last newsletter featured our unique "armadillo" flute player. We don't think there is another one in the world. This lively fellow, February's Petroglyph of the Month, is one of our "tailed" flute players. There are at least four of them on the mesa. We don't know why they have tails or what creature they might represent, but we think they belong in the animal category. This one's particularly extravagant tail and beautiful execution makes him a real star.

Upcoming Projects
Everyone who has visited Mesa Prieta will agree that there is eye candy everywhere. Toward that end we have decided to publish a coffee table book to satisfy people's desire to have the images available to enjoy in a book format together with information about them. To our good fortune, Stephen Hill, owner of Kiva Publishing, and creator of numerous gorgeous books about petroglyphs and other subjects, has offered to be our publisher.

The tome will feature the work of several well-known photographers and will include essays by various scholars in the field. This will be a BIG PROJECT and will take a couple of years to come to fruition. We'll be sharing more about this project soon.
