Timeline 150: Quebec, Canada, and the weight of history

In preparation for Canada Day, discover last month's Trudeau/Big Thinking Lecture featuring Jocelyn Létourneau, 2006 fellow and professor of history at Université Laval, and Andréanne LeBrun, 2015 scholar and doctoral student in history at Université Sherbrooke, on how different generations view the past differently and the challenges and potential that these differences carry for the future. Speaking on 29 May at Ryerson University during the Annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Lebrun and Létourneau also pondered how our understanding of the history of Canada and Quebec shapes Quebec-Canada relations and identities. Walrus Talks: We desire a better country

In celebration of the country’s 150th anniversary, The Walrus Talks Conversations about Canada: We desire a better country series has asked youth leaders and members of the Order of Canada across the country how they would perfect the idea of Canada. Steven Hoffman appointed full professor at York University

2012 scholar Steven Hoffman has been appointed a full professor at the York University's School of Health Policy & Management with a cross-appointment to Osgoode Hall Law School. He will be working to develop the school’s new inter-faculty Global Health Research Institute and will be nominated as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Global Governance and Social Innovation. 


Aaron Mills appointed assistant professor at McGill University

2014 scholar Aaron Mills will join McGill University's Faculty of Law as an assistant professor in August 2018. Dean Robert Leckey, himself a 2003 scholar, welcomed the appointment, saying that "Aaron is arriving as we work to realize the unfulfilled promise of our longstanding commitment to studying multiple legal traditions as it relates to Indigenous law."


Caulfield wins Digital Publishing Award

2013 fellow Tim Caulfield won the 2017 Digital Publishing Awards in the best blog or online-only column category for his regular Policy Options column The Cure, which discusses popular health myths. 


Cleo Paskal launches The Oceania Research Project website

2015 fellow Cleo Paskal has launched the website http://protorp.org/ of The Oceania Research Project, a multilingual research and analysis hub for those interested in the geopolitics of Oceania. 


Tolley and Borrows win 2017 Donald Smiley Prize

Each year, the Canadian Political Science Association awards the Donald Smiley Prize to the best book published in English or French relating to the study of government and politics in Canada. For the 2017 edition of the prize, the jury awarded two winners instead of the usual one. 2006 fellow John Borrows was recognized for his book Freedom and Indigenous Constitutionalism, while 2010 scholar Erin Tolley won for her book Framed: Media and the Coverage of Race in Canadian Politics.


David Theodore named Canada Research Chair

2009 scholar David Theodore has been named the Canada Research Chair in Architecture, Health, and Computation, Tier 2. Theodore is an assistant professor at the McGill University School of Architecture. Tier 2 chairs recognize exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field.
