Meet the 2017 scholars!

On 5 July, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation announced 15 new recipients of its doctoral scholarship in the social sciences and humanities. From British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador, the newest scholars are exceptional students who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence and civic engagement. Focusing on important questions for Canada and the world, they are researching areas as diverse as literature, philosophy, educational studies, public health, international development, political science, and law. Report from Canada’s Drug Futures Forum

From April 4-5, 2017, a multidisciplinary team of scholars convened the Canada’s Drug Futures Forum in Ottawa to document priorities for Canadian drug policy in the coming decade. The recommendations that emerged from the Forum have been presented within five domains: national drug policy reform; criminal justice reform; prevention, harm reduction, and treatment; research and knowledge exchange; and international leadership. Organized by scholars Jennifer Peirce, Ayden Scheim, Claudia Stoicescu, Meaghan Thumath, and Daniel Werb, the forum was supported by several partners including the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation. Understanding Washington DC: What scholars learned

In this critical moment in US history, the American social and political landscape is informing current research and scholarship globally and has a critical impact on many of the world’s most pressing issues. To gain a better understanding of current US-Canada relations and other unfolding debates, 19 members of the Foundation’s community visited Washington DC on 12-13 June 2017. Two community members appointed to the Order of Canada

Two members of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation were appointed members of the Order of Canada on 30 June 2017: Mi’sel Joe, 2009 mentor, for his leadership in developing and enhancing the well-being and financial vitality of the Miawpukek First Nation, and John H. Sims, 2012 mentor, for his commitment to improving access to justice, and for his principled and respected leadership as a senior public servant.

Claudia Stoicescu wins the 2017 Barnett Prize from Oxford University

2014 scholar Claudia Stoicescu has been awarded the Barnett Prize for the year's best research paper from Oxford University's Department of Social Policy and Intervention for her paper “Intimate partner violence and HIV-related sexual risk behaviour among women who inject drugs in Indonesia: a respondent-driven sampling study.” +
