Board of directors — Charles Bingham, president/communications director; Stanley Lopata, vice president; Amanda Anjum, treasurer; Nina Vizcarrondo, secretary/Sitka Farmers Market manager; Laura Schmidt, St. Peter's Fellowship Farm lead gardener (honorary board member); we have space for you on our board.

SLFN seeks a new farmers market manager

After three years, the Sitka Local Foods Network is losing Sitka Farmers Market manager Nina Vizcarrondo to U.S. Coast Guard relocation. That means we need to find a new market manager for the 2020 summer. Our 2020 dates aren't set yet, but we usually host 6-8 markets from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on selected Saturdays at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall from July through September. We also host a SLFN farm stand during the annual Running of the Boots costumed fun run fundraiser in late September. SLFN board president, who has served as assistant manager the past three years, plans to return for 2020, which will help ease the burden of the new manager. The manager is in charge of recruiting vendors and assigning them tables/tents for each market, setting up and taking down the market, recruiting volunteers to help out at the SLFN farm stand, coordinating the SLFN farm stand, and other duties. We store all of our market supplies in a construction trailer, so it is preferable the new manager has access to a vehicle with a trailer hitch to move the trailer to the market venue on market Saturdays. This is a contract position, and the manager is paid based on experience once a month from May through October. To see more job duties and find out what we need in an application, click this link. The application deadline is Wednesday, Jan. 8, and we want to hire someone before Nina and her family leave Sitka this spring so we can do some training before the season. For more details, contact SLFN board president Charles Bingham at 623-7660 or sitkalocalfoodsnetwork@gmail.com.

Like local food in Sitka? Join our board of directors

Did you enjoy the fresh local veggies at the Sitka Farmers Market this summer? Did you take one of our garden education classes this spring? Do you have an interest in getting more access to locally grown, harvested and produced food, and an interest in food security? If so, please consider joining our board of directors. We need new board members to keep offering these programs, and we'd love to have you join us. We need board members to keep things going, especially since we may be losing a couple to military relocation. If we don't find new board members, we may have to scale back our programs. For more details, please click this link. This page has links to our board job descriptions and applications. Our next meeting will be from 6-7:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Sitka Public Library. Feel free to check us out. Our meetings are open to the public. For more details, contact SLFN board president Charles Bingham at 623-7660 or sitkalocalfoodsnetwork@gmail.com.

2020 sponsorship program opens

The 202 Sitka Local Foods Network sponsorship program is open, and businesses and individuals are encouraged to contribute to help us keep our programs going and fulfill our mission of increasing the amount of locally harvested and produced foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. Your donations help us host the Sitka Farmers Market, grow food at St. Peter's Fellowship Farm, provide garden education classes in the spring, and sponsor the Sitka Food Business Innovation Contest. Food security is a tenuous thing in Sitka, and we're trying to do our part to improve our community food security. We thank the Alaska Comprehensive Cancer Control Partnership for renewing its sponsorship for 2020. To learn more about our sponsorship program, click this link.

#GivingTuesday helps support nonprofit groups

You've heard of Black Friday, Small-Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, days after Thanksgiving dedicated to shopping. But have you heard about #GivingTuesday, which is a day set aside for people to support local nonprofit organizations during the holiday season? #GivingTuesday is Dec. 3 this year, and the Sitka Local Foods Network has a couple of fundraising pages so people can support our mission, one on our MightyCause fundraising site and one on Facebook. Noted food systems expert Mark Winne has donated two copies of his new book, Food Town USA, to the top donors in our Facebook fundraiser (the book examines the local food systems of seven communities around the country, and Sitka is Chapter 4)..
