Sitka Health Summit set for Thursday, Oct. 4

Do you have an idea for a Sitka community wellness goal? The 12th annual Sitka Health Summit planning day is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, in Room 229 of the University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus. Over the years, several Sitka Health Summit projects have been food-related — including starting the Sitka Farmers Market, doing the Sitka Community Foods Assessment, launching the Fish to Schools program, planting numerous fruit trees around town, and more. Participants will choose two community wellness goals to pursue over the next year, and those projects will be eligible to receive up to $2,000 in seed money to help them get going. This event is free and open to all Sitka residents. To learn more, click this link.

Sitka Farmers Market earns top Alaska honors

For the second straight year and third time in four years, the Sitka Farmers Market has earned the top rank for Alaska in the American Farmland Trust's 10th annual Farmers Market Celebration. This is a contest where people vote for their favorite farmers markets around the country. The top market in the country was the Winter Gardens Farmers Market of Winter Gardens, Fla. We held seven Sitka Farmers Markets this summer, on selected Saturdays from July 7 through Sept. 15. To learn more about the contest, click this link.

Like local food in Sitka? Please join our board of directors

Are you enjoying the fresh local veggies at the Sitka Farmers Market this summer? Did you take one of our garden education classes this spring? Do you have an interest in getting more access to locally grown, harvested and produced food, and an interest in food security? If so, please consider joining our board of directors. We need new board members to keep offering these programs, and we'd love to have you join us. We just found out two of our current board members are leaving town this summer, so if you've ever thought about joining our board this is the time to do it. We need board members to keep things going. For more details, please click this link. This page has links to our board job descriptions and applications. Our next meeting will be from 6-7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Sitka Public Library. Feel free to check us out. Our meetings are open to the public.
