We have openings on our board of directors

The Sitka Local Foods Network is recruiting new board members to help us finish out 2016 and take us into 2017. Due to some unexpected life changes, a couple of our current board members are going to be leaving us this summer. That means we need to fill their spots as we continue in our mission to increase the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans.

Our board is a working board, which means each board member also sits on one or more of our committees related to the Sitka Farmers Market, St. Peter's Fellowship Farm, education, fundraising, board development, etc.  Even though we work hard, we have a lot of fun as we work on improving the food security of Sitka and Southeast Alaska. To learn more about what it takes to be a board member and to fill out an application, click this link.

Also, feel free to attend our next board meeting from 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, at the See House behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church. Our board meetings are always open to the public.

Sitka Farmers Market dates set, vendors needed

The dates for the 2016 Sitka Farmers Markets have been set, and this year we will host seven markets, the most ever. Our markets this year will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, July 2, 16, 30, Aug. 13, 20, Sept. 3, and Sept. 10, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall (235 Katlian Street). Lisa Gilardi has been contracted to be our Sitka Farmers Market manager this year.

The markets will undergo a few changes for the 2016 market season, including a new management structure this year that is more vendor-driven. We restructured our vendor fees to put more of an emphasis on local food and produce, and now we're recruiting folks to sell their local products at the markets. Click this link to learn how you can become a vendor.

First 2016 garden mentor classes announced

The first two classes of the season have been announced as the Sitka Local Foods Network garden education committee launches its third year of the garden mentor program. Our garden mentor program provides one-on-one mentoring to Sitka families who are new to gardening, but the classes are open to the public. Our participating families can be in the program for two years, as they learn to grow a variety of different crops that do well in Sitka. Click here to learn more about the program.

Join our garden party

Help us get the St. Peter's Fellowship Farm communal garden ready for the spring during a garden party from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the garden (located behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church). We will be getting the garden beds ready for planting, so we can grow lots of fresh veggies to sell at the Sitka Farmers Markets this summer. Our garden parties are family friendly, so feel free to bring the kids. For more information, click this link.
Plant A Row for the Hungry this year

When you plant your garden this spring, plant an extra row for your local food bank. This is a great way to help more people have food. Click here for more information.
