Education opportunities abound in March

Want to learn how to grow your own food? Or do you want to learn how to prepare it once it's grown? Check our website for several education opportunities this spring from the Sitka Local Foods Network and the Sitka Kitch.

The Sitka Local Foods Network education committee recently posted a list of spring garden education classes. You can read more about them at this link. Also, we are always looking for volunteers to teach new classes so please contact Jennifer Carter at 747-0520 if you think you'd like to teach a class.

The Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen (located in the First Presbyterian Church, 505 Sawmill Creek Road) is offering the Basic Culinary Skills series in March, which is geared toward helping people gain the basic kitchen skills they need for a restaurant job (this class series also is open to people who want to improve their personal kitchen skills).

Also, watch for more information as the Sitka Local Foods Network garden education committee launches its third year of the garden mentor program, and we launch our new downtown teaching garden at Baranof Elementary School.

Learn about changes to the Sitka Farmers Market

The Sitka Farmers Market will undergo a few changes for the 2016 market season, and vendors or potential vendors are encouraged to contact us at sitkalocalfoodsnetwork@gmail.com to learn about the changes, which may include a couple of weekday night markets this summer in addition to our usual Saturday markets. We held a meeting for prospective vendors in February, and we are looking to schedule another one in March (so watch our website for details once it's scheduled). We will have a new management structure in place this year, too.

We are looking to make the market more sustainable, and to find out what will attract more food vendors. To learn more, click this link. Also, keep an eye on our website because we will be announcing the recruitment of a new market manager contract position to coordinate the market and vendors. We want to bring more fun to the market this year.

Please Pick.Click.Give. when filing your PFD

The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application period opened on Jan. 1 and closes on March 31. When you file for your PFD you can use the Pick.Click.Give. charitable contribution program to donate to the Sitka Local Foods Network.

Even though the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application period ends on March 31, you still can go back into your application through Aug. 31 to update your Pick.Click.Give. donations. Last year we had 64 people pledge to donate $3,350 to the Sitka Local Foods Network, and this year we'd love to see 75 donors for $4,000. There are more than 500 charities in Alaska participating in Pick.Click.Give., including 24 in Sitka, and it's a great program to share the wealth. Click this link to learn more about our Pick.Click.Give. program.

Speaking of donations, some of you may be looking for a last-minute donation for your 2015 income tax. Others of you may not qualify for the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend program. You can still donate to us by using our secure online donation website through Razoo.com, or you can mail us a check at Sitka Local Foods Network, 408 Marine Street, Suite D, Sitka, Alaska 99835.

Your support helps us meet our mission of increasing the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. We appreciate your contributions to Sitka's food security. Thanks for your support.
