Volunteer to teach garden education classes

Are you an experienced gardener in Sitka who wants to help your neighbors learn how to grow food? The Sitka Local Foods Network needs volunteer teachers to help us put together a list of spring garden education classes. Classes typically last 1 1/2 to two hours, and we are sometimes able to host classes at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall (some instructors host their classes at their own garden plots). Past classes include Sitka Gardening 101, How to Extend Your Garden Season, Backyard Chickens, Container Gardening, Potatoes, and more. If you interested in teaching a class, contact Charles Bingham at 623-7660 or charleswbingham3@gmail.com. For more details, click this link.

Pick.Click.Give. giving campaign continues

Pick.Click.Give. is an easy way to contribute to your favorite nonprofits, and the Sitka Local Foods Network appreciates your support. Sitka Food Business Innovation Contest opens

Do you have a great idea for a local food-oriented business in Sitka? Do you grow food, cook food, or make value-added food products? The Sitka Local Foods Network is hosting the second annual Sitka Food Business Innovation Contest. There are two divisions — one for existing businesses and one for start-up businesses (two years or younger) — and the winner in each division can win $1,500 to launch or expand a Sitka food business. There is a $25 entry fee, and entries must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019, at Sitka Local Foods Network, 408-D Marine Street, Sitka, Alaska, 99835, or at sitkalocalfoodsnetwork@gmail.com (attention Food Business Contest). In 2018 we awarded one $1,500 prize to Hope Merritt of Gimbal Botanicals, who used the money to hire interns to help her harvest and make her seaweed products. For info, contact Charles Bingham at 623-7660. For more information about the contest, go to this link.
