Thursday is last chance to file for your PFD

The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application period closes on Thursday, March 31, so don't forget to file your application. When you file for your PFD you can use the Pick.Click.Give. charitable contribution program to donate to the Sitka Local Foods Network.

Even though the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application period ends on March 31, you still can go back into your application through Aug. 31 to update your Pick.Click.Give. donations. Last year we had 64 people pledge to donate $3,350 to the Sitka Local Foods Network, and this year we'd love to see 75 donors for $4,000. There are more than 600 charities in Alaska participating in Pick.Click.Give., including 24 in Sitka, and it's a great program to share the wealth. Click this link to learn more about our Pick.Click.Give. program.

Speaking of donations, some of you may not qualify for the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend program. You can still donate to us by using our secure online donation website through Razoo.com, or you can mail us a check at Sitka Local Foods Network, 408 Marine Street, Suite D, Sitka, Alaska 99835.

Your support helps us meet our mission of increasing the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. We appreciate your contributions to Sitka's food security. Thanks for your support.

Learn about changes to the Sitka Farmers Market

The Sitka Farmers Market will undergo a few changes for the 2016 market season, including a new management structure this year that is more vendor-driven. Join us from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, at the Westmark Hotel banquet room to learn more about the changes. Learn how to grow your small business using the farmers market, and people who register their booths at this meeting will receive a 5 percent discount on their market fees. Click this link to learn more.

Also, we are recruiting a new market manager contract position to coordinate the market and vendors, and the deadline to apply is April 1. Click this link to learn more. We want to bring more fun to the market this year.

Education opportunities abound this spring

Want to learn how to grow your own food? Or do you want to learn how to prepare it once it's grown? Check our website for several education opportunities this spring from the Sitka Local Foods Network and the Sitka Kitch.

The Sitka Local Foods Network education committee recently posted a list of spring garden education classes. You can read more about them at this link. We hope to add some new classes in the future, including one on how to use a high tunnel. Also, we are always looking for volunteers to teach new classes so please contact Jennifer Carter at 747-0520 if you think you'd like to teach a class.

The Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen (located in the First Presbyterian Church, 505 Sawmill Creek Road) is wrapping up the Basic Culinary Skills series in March, which is geared toward helping people gain the basic kitchen skills they need for a restaurant job (this class series also is open to people who want to improve their personal kitchen skills). We are hoping to announce some new classes in April at the Sitka Kitch.

Also, watch for more information as the Sitka Local Foods Network garden education committee launches its third year of the garden mentor program, and we launch our new downtown teaching garden at Baranof Elementary School.
