Volunteer to teach garden education classes

Are you an experienced gardener in Sitka who wants to help your neighbors learn how to grow food? The Sitka Local Foods Network needs volunteer teachers to help us put together a list of spring garden education classes. Classes typically last 1 1/2 to two hours, and we are sometimes able to host classes at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall (some instructors host their classes at their own garden plots). Past classes include Sitka Gardening 101, How to Extend Your Garden Season, Backyard Chickens, Container Gardening, Potatoes, and more. If you interested in teaching a class, please contact Charles Bingham at 623-7660 or We hope to announce classes in late-March, so contact us soon. We especially need someone to teach the Sitka Gardening 101 class this year. For more details, click this link.

The Sitka Local Foods Network is hosting the second annual Sitka Food Business Innovation Contest. There are two divisions — one for existing businesses and one for start-up businesses (two years or younger) — and the winner in each division can win $1,500 to launch or expand a Sitka food business. There is a $25 entry fee, and entries must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2019, at Sitka Local Foods Network, 408-D Marine Street, Sitka, Alaska, 99835, or at (attention Food Business Contest). In 2018 we awarded one $1,500 prize to Hope Merritt of Gimbal Botanicals, who used the money to hire interns to help her harvest and make her seaweed products. Support our Sitka Local Foods Network sponsors

We want to thank the Sitka Local Foods Network's 2019 sponsors for helping us continue in our mission to increase the amount of locally produced and harvested food in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. We have one sponsor at the Grower level ($2,500-plus), and that's the Alaska Comprehensive Cancer Control Partnership. We have two sponsors at the Harvester level ($1,000-$2,499), the White Elephant Shop (White E, which provided us with a $1,500 grant to match WIC/SNAP benefits at the Sitka Farmers Market) and the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC). We also have five sponsors at the Planter level ($250-$999) — Sea Mart Quality Foods, Sitka True Value, Harry Race Pharmacy and Photo, ALPS Federal Credit Union, and Market Center. Finally, we have several individuals who are sponsoring us at the Friend level ($50-$249), including some who donated through the 2018 Pick.Click.Give. program. They include Beth Short-Rhoads, Nina Maus, Charles Backus, Patricia Atkinson, Christina Kowalczewski, Charles Bingham, Catherine Allgood-Mellema, Michael Baines, Lloyd Dennis, Beth Kindig, Jud Kirkness, and Jaime Zellhuber.
