Board of directors — Charles Bingham, president/communications director; Stanley Lopata, vice president; Amanda Anjum, treasurer; Nina Vizcarrondo, secretary/Sitka Farmers Market manager; Laura Schmidt, St. Peter's Fellowship Farm lead gardener (honorary board member); we have space for you on our board.

Sitka Farmers Markets open Saturday

The 12th summer of Sitka Farmers Markets kicks off this Saturday, with the first market of the season from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 6 at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall (235 Katlian Street). Vendor registration has been open for a couple of months for the 2019 Sitka Farmers Markets, which take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on seven Saturdays — July 6, July 27, Aug. 10, Aug. 17, Aug. 31, Sept. 7, and Sept. 21 — at the ANB Founders Hall, and we expect a full market on July 6. We plan to offer our usual fresh produce and a variety of other local foods, such as locally made candy, bread, seafood, and more. We also have music and other fun. We offer a youth vendor program for those age 12 and younger. And we match SNAP and WIC benefits up to $20 per market through a grant from the White Elephant Shop. People who ride their bikes to the market can get a 20 percent discount on produce at the Sitka Local Foods Network farm stand if they have a Bicycle Benefits sticker on their helmet (we also sell the stickers for $5 each). To learn more about how to be a vendor, click this link. Nina Vizcarrondo (738-9301) will manage the markets for the third straight year, and Charles Bingham (623-7660) will assist. You also can email sitkafarmersmarket@gmail.com for more details. We always need volunteers to help set up and take down the market, as well as sell food at the SLFN farm stand.

SLFN applies for Certified Naturally Grown status

The Sitka Local Foods Network is in the process of applying for a Certified Naturally Grown status for the St. Peter's Fellowship Farm and its satellite gardens. Certified Naturally Grown is a process similar to organic certification, which is hard to obtain in Alaska because the USDA does not have any organic certification inspectors in Alaska and they have to be brought to the state from the Lower 48. With the CNG process, other local farmers who practice CNG principles can do inspections, which involve completing a multi-page form that asks questions about growing practices, what fertilizers and soil amendments are used, what types of row cover are used, how you compost, how you rotate crops, and more. Andrea Fraga of Middle Island Gardens joined St. Peter's Fellowship Farm lead gardener Laura Schmidt for our CNG inspection on Tuesday, July 2, and all we need is for the inspection paperwork to be submitted to earn our certification.
