Celebrate National Farmers Market Week

National Farmers Market Week is Aug. 4-10 this year, and we invite you to celebrate at the Sitka Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall. We kicked off our 12th summer of Sitka Farmers Markets on Saturday, July 6, and also had a market on July 27. Our other markets this summer are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Aug. 17, Aug. 31, Sept. 7, and Sept. 21, at ANB Founders Hall. Vendor registration has been open for a couple of months for the 2019 Sitka Farmers Markets, and we have been full a vendors. We plan to offer our usual fresh produce and a variety of other local foods, such as locally made candy, bread, seafood, and more. We also have music and other fun. We offer a youth vendor program for those age 12 and younger. And we match SNAP and WIC benefits up to $20 per market through a grant from the White Elephant Shop. People who ride their bikes to the market can get a 20 percent discount on produce at the Sitka Local Foods Network farm stand if they have a Bicycle Benefits sticker on their helmet (we also sell the stickers for $5 each). To learn more about how to be a vendor, click this link. Nina Vizcarrondo (738-9301) will manage the markets for the third straight year, and Charles Bingham (623-7660) will assist. You also can email sitkafarmersmarket@gmail.com for more details. We always need volunteers to help set up and take down the market, as well as sell food at the SLFN farm stand.

SLFN introduces new Sitka Farmers Market tote bags

The Sitka Local Foods Network has new Sitka Farmers Market tote bags available as a fundraiser. The tote bags are $10 each, but we'll give you one tote bag free if you purchase $50 worth of produce and/or Alaska Grown products from our Sitka Local Foods Network farm stand at the Sitka Farmers Market. The city's October ballot includes a plastic bag tax initiative, so buy a couple of tote bags to reduce your reliance on plastic bags. You can learn more at this link.

Pick.Click.Give. donation change deadline is Aug. 31

If you're like most Alaskans, you filed your Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend application before the March 31 deadline and haven't thought about it since, except to wonder how big the PFD will be this year. But even though the PFD application deadline has passed, did you know you can still go into your PFD online application and add or change your Pick.Click.Give. donations through Aug. 31? If you forgot to make some Pick.Click.Give. donations, now is the time to do it. Anyway, click this link to learn how you can add or change your PCG donations on your 2019 PFD application.

Sitka Kitch offers classes with Katie Carroll, Kayla Caprice

The Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen is launching a new cooking class series, "Cooking With Kayla Caprice," who is a line cook this summer with Ludvig's Bistro.

In addition, it is hosting a Cooking A Balanced Meal Featuring Alaska Seafood class with SEARHC dietitian Katie Carroll from 6-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13. at the Sitka Kitch. This class costs $40 and the registration deadline is late on Saturday night, Aug. 10.

The next class in the Cooking With Kayla Caprice class series, is a special Cooking For One/Small-Space Cooking class for ages 13-25 only. This special class is free thanks to a donation from SEARHC. Even though the class is free, we do ask students to pre-register by Monday, Aug. 12, so we know how many students to expect.

These classes take place at the new Sitka Lutheran Church location of the Sitka Kitch (please enter through the back door, through the alley by the old Bev's Flowers and Gifts location).

Unless noted, Sitka Kitch classes cost $40, which includes all food and supply costs. You can register for the class and pre-pay by PayPal or credit/debit card by going to our online registration page and clicking on the class title at http://sitkakitch.eventsmart.com. You can arrange cash or check payment by contacting Chandler or Clarice at the Sitka Conservation Society at 747-7509 or emailing sitkakitch@sitkawild.org.
