Running of the Boots fun run set for Sept. 17

Paint up your XtraTufs, because the 22nd annual Running of the Boots costumed fun run fundraiser for the Sitka Local Foods Network will be on Saturday, Sept. 17, this year. Registration for the event opens at 10 a.m., with costume judging at 10:30 a.m. and the race at 11 a.m. Meet at the big tent by St. Michael's Cathedral downtown. This event is part of the Greater Sitka Chamber of Commerce's Season's-End Celebration, which means there will be a lunch after the race. We also will have a farm stand booth selling produce from the St. Peter's Fellowship Farm communal garden. The entry fee is $5 per individual and $20 for families. We usually have lots of prizes. Sitka Farmers Markets wrap up in September

It's that time of year again, which means we're hosting seven Sitka Farmers Markets throughout the 2016 summer. We've already hosted five markets — on July 2, July 16, July 30, Aug. 13, and Aug. 20 (links include slideshows from the markets) — and we have two markets left on the schedule.

Our remaining markets this summer will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 3, and Sept. 10, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall (235 Katlian Street). Matthew Jackson is serving as our Sitka Farmers Market manager this year. For the Sept. 3 market, we should have pork products from Mat-Valley Meats for sale, plus the Alaska Native Sisterhood will be hosting a fundraiser for Paulette Moreno and Andrew Roberts after they lost their apartment in a recent fire. At the Sept. 10 market, we hope to have free pressure canner gauge testing available. Also, don't forget to recommend the Sitka Farmers Market in the American Farmland Trust's eighth annual Farmers Market Celebration (we were Alaska's top market last year and want to repeat).

The markets will undergo a few changes for the 2016 market season, including a new management structure this year that is more vendor-driven. We restructured our vendor fees to put more of an emphasis on local food and produce, and now we're recruiting folks to sell their local products at the markets. Informal Sitka Garden Club to meet on Friday, Sept. 2

Are you a gardener who likes checking out what's happening in other gardens? Do you want to swap ideas with fellow growers about what works and doesn't work here in Sitka? The Sitka Local Foods Network is hosting an informal Sitka Garden Club meeting from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, at the home of Jennifer and Brinnen Carter (113 Jamestown Drive). Feel free to stop by and swap advice about how your garden grew this summer. To learn more, click this link

UAF Cooperative Extension to keep Sitka office

After announcing in May that it planned to shut down the Anchorage and Sitka offices of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, the UAF Cooperative Extension Service now says it plans to keep both offices open. For Sitka, there won't be many changes other than federal grant funding now will pay the salary of program assistant Jasmine Shaw. But in Anchorage it means a smaller office with no district agents, just program assistants. The UAF Cooperative Extension Service provides a variety of services statewide, such as a wealth of garden and food preservation information and training, the coordination of the state's 4-H programs, and more. To learn more about the plans to keep the offices open, click this link.
