"When a body moves, it's the most revealing thing. Dance for me a minute, and I'll tell you who you are."

Jazzercise Bozeman

2320 W Main St, Ste 6, Bozeman, Montana 59718

Join us April 17th at Jazzercise Bozeman for our 2016 Auditions! Registration begins at 10am. We will start the day off with a short warm-up to get everyone moving at 10:30 am and then continue with some of this year's choreographers teaching short combinations for all to try.

All dancers 18+, male or female, are welcome to audition. No experience is required as IndepenDANCE strives to include all dancers of all styles and abilities in our show each year.  No rehearsed material is necessary, and there is no fee to audition!

When did dance become part of your life?

"I started partnering when I approached middle age because I wanted to meet girls, which was not happening in my life.  I didn't succeed much at that goal, but found I had a need to dance despite limited ability.  I was a hardcore Lindy Hop dancer when that was popular and migrated to Argentine Tango for around 20 years, which involved less intense sweating.  Performance type dance involvement happened much later.   Lauren Coleman, my tango teacher, offered some workshops including one on one ballet.   I [soon] found out about a jazz lesson by Rena Easton.  I took a couple of lessons, and she was looking for some men for her piece in IndepenDANCE.  The steps I was asked to do were not much more than walking, but the next year I went to the audition and ended up way over my head in 3 groups (modern, jazz, and African).

I might point out that I am a retired engineer and took my first ballet class a few weeks after my retirement.  It seems like there are so few men in dance that we can get away with less talent and skill."

Who are/were your influences in the dance world? Who inspires you?

"I'm afraid my knowledge of the dance world is limited.  Whenever I saw professional or accomplished dancers, I thought how cool it would be to be able to do that, since I had no experience in my youth.  Most of what I know comes from things related to IndepenDANCE."

What is your favorite style of dance to perform and why?

"I don't really have a favorite; they all impress me.  I think jazz or hip hop or something Latin would most fit my personal style and way of moving and the way music speaks to me.  I'm taking ballet lessons, which seems futile sometimes, because I love the extreme grace of the style and because it's the source of the vocabulary of dance (it's fortunate that I speak French).  Modern dance, I think, is more open to someone without specific skills because it seems there are no set rules.  I would do them all if I had the time and energy.  I would love to be competent at ballet, but that may not happen."

What is your favorite style of dance to watch and why?

"Having danced a little now, I am always impressed by high level dance; I have an idea how hard they work to pull off what they do.  From ballet to hip-hop, I like to see musical, athletic, imaginative and polished dance.  When I see dance performed which appears flawless to me, I think, ‘Wow.’"

When did you join indepenDANCE and how did you find out about it?

"I think I was in on the 2nd performance.  I stepped away a couple of years.  I started ballet lessons and felt I had no business on stage for a while.  I came back last year and had a mostly great experience, though it's certainly a challenge in many ways.  This year would be my 5th."

What has your favorite year of indepenDANCE been and why? Hard to believe we’re entering our 8th season!

"The first time was exciting just to be on stage (I had danced on stage at Club Med a few times, where we rehearsed following a leader two times and performed for a crowd the same day).

My second year was overwhelming, when I took part in 3 groups.  Last year was great for many reasons.  I felt somewhat comfortable with the process and my girlfriend and her family were in the audience.  I didn't feel quite so much like an outsider."

What are you most excited about for this season of indepenDANCE?

"I have decided that I want to audition.  That's hard because I'm slow to break down and reproduce steps that I'm shown.  I'd like to try something new.  I sometimes say to myself that I have it all:  I'm old AND inexperienced."
