Southern Wesleyan University’s Alumni Association is planning receptions across the state to celebrate all of our spring graduates. Receptions will begin at 6 p.m. Here are the dates and locations:

Nicholson-Mitchell Christian Ministry Center surpasses goal

SWU's Division of Religion is moving closer to realizing its goal of a new home, thanks to the completion of the $1.4 million Nicholson-Mitchell Christian Ministry Center Campaign. Left: Dr. Bob Black and Rev. Jim Wiggins, co-chairs for the campaign, unveiled a check for $1,467,801.39 during the university board of trustees meeting April 8 at Central. Right: Trustees applaud the good news. According to University President Todd Voss, the goal covers Southern Wesleyan’s purchase of the former Alive Wesleyan Church facility and property and also renovations. The University plans to close on the property this month.

Athletics

Susan Rouse Invitational

SWU track and field won 14 events and set 10 school records as they played host for the first time, welcoming nine teams to Joe R. Gilbert Track and the Susan Rouse Invitational. Read more>>

SWUPYs set for April 30

Outstanding SWU student-athletes will be honored at the 2015 SWUPYs, an annual "black tie" event held at Newton Hobson auditorium. Alumni and friends are invited to this special event April 30. More details are coming to swuathletics.com.

Volleyball Clinic

The Warriors Volleyball Team had a great clinic April 7 for the Easley YMCA, Coach Julia Reininga was impressed by the talents she saw. Follow the team on Facebook.

Tickets:

Tickets for baseball games are $5 for adults and $2 for students (elementary-college). All SWU staff, faculty and students with ID will be admitted for free.

Alumnus’ church helping community's displaced workers 

Denton Wesleyan Church is responding to devastating news of the closing of a local furniture company by offering services to affected employees. Charlie Collins, ('89), pastor of Denton Wesleyan Church, said they are organizing workshops for résumé writing and interview skills as well as a job fair to connect workers with local employers. Congratulations!

Matt Blackwell (’13) had already been accepted to dental school in Arizona and was planning on going there. On April 13 he was accepted to dental school at MUSC in Charleston and GRU in Augusta.
Amy Burnett ('08), who teaches mathematics at Berea High School, was named a finalist for Greenville County Teacher of the Year. Burnett, who has 10 years of teaching experience, is a MED graduate from Greenville.  
Thomas Crane ('09)('11) and wife Judy celebrated their 31-year wedding anniversary together on March 3 on top of Stone Mountain in Georgia. Thomas and Judy also raced each other on go carts like old times back when they were dating. Thomas earned an ASBA and a BSBA from SWU.
Daniel Furr ('10), an elementary education graduate and a fourth-grade teacher at Dacusville Elementary School in Pickens County, was recognized by Magic 98.9 radio as this month’s Teacher Who Makes Magic
Sean Gasperson ('08) received his Ph.D. in industrial organizational psychology from N.C. State this past December. He now works with Castle Worldwide in test development and psychometrics. He graduated with his master’s in IO psychology from East Carolina University in May, 2010, where he met his wife, Jenna Hartinger Gasperson. They live in Raleigh, N.C. 
Charlotte Houke, professor of business, is pictured with her new twin grandchildren, Preston Henry Pond and Timothy Howard Pond, born April 8 at 2 a.m. They are also the grandchildren of Tim Pond ('08) a SWU alumnus and formerly a chaplain for N. Augusta AGS students. Tom earned his master of ministry from SWU. 
Paula Preusz Lemons (’94) received the University System of Georgia Board of Regents Excellence in Teaching Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. “I'm grateful to SWU for the contribution the institution made to my education and my life, but most of all I'm thankful to God and to have the chance to serve Him as a professor,” Lemons said. Lemons is associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at UGA.

Bench Dedication at Southern Wesleyan University

Benches at the Sheriff National Guard Memorial Flag Plaza were dedicated April 8 in memory and in honor of members of the Collins and Sheriff families. Mitchell Award

James Spaugh, lead pastor of Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church, Hertford, N.C., received the Virgil A. Mitchell Award for Excellence in Pastoral Ministry April 1 at Southern Wesleyan University in Central. Read more>>

SWU professor to lead Israel tour

Paul Jordan, professor of computer science, will be leading a 10-day Community Bible Church study tour of Israel, along with Jay Harlan and Daniel Jachens Oct. 2-11.
