Good Afternoon Friend,
It's been another exciting week for the Boston Compact! We are pleased to share that the Boston School Committee voted 5-0 (with one Member absent and one recusing herself) to sign on to a renewed compact with its charter and Catholic school colleagues. The updated compact will go before individual charter school boards and the Catholic Schools Superintendent in the days ahead. During the discussion around the updated compact, we also heard requests for greater visibility of the compact's continued work, a request we take to heart.

Last week also provided our first opportunity to hear from families and community members at a citywide community meeting on the unified enrollment concept. With help from district and charter leaders, we reviewed the current enrollment systems, shared the unified enrollment proposal, heard concerns and engaged in conversations with families. We were inspired by the personal enrollment experiences that families so generously shared, a dialogue that set the tone for an inclusive and informative exchange.
Families and community members broke out into three groups to discuss what information they would want in selecting the best fit schools for their children, how to ensure quality options for students with special needs and English language learners, and ideas for how a unified enrollment system could be administered. They shared concerns, questions and suggestions. Some families expressed worries that as more schools expand to serve broader groups of students with disabilities and English Language Learners, it will be difficult at first for families to gauge how well those schools can serve these populations of students. Other families advocated for an enrollment website with apples to apples comparisons for every school.
We’ll be keeping our notes from these conversations online but here’s a peek:
We extend a special thank you to our childcare providers who kept children at the meeting entertained while their family advocates discussed the proposal at hand.
Our team already has begun to revise the structure of our next meeting, looking to provide the details families need to understand this proposal while also creating additional space for us to hear feedback from the community and learn from the experiences of families.
We hope you’ll join us at an upcoming citywide community meeting.  We will provide childcare, a light dinner and translation services. In the meantime, remember to check out the Boston Globe's Sunday editorial that calls for a unified enrollment system for Boston district and charter schools.
Hope to see you soon!
