2 Hours In SLU
Hannah Faires
For this installment of #2HoursInSLU, we hear from Hannah Faires, Outreach & Events Coordinator for Commute Seattle. Follow Hannah on her journey around South Lake Union using local transportation!

"I ordinarily make an appearance at Lake Union Park to watch the wooden boats coming and going along South Lake Union, enjoy a Bloody Mary at Row House Cafe (best fixin's in the city!) and bike along the future Westlake Cycle Track.

However, during my #2HoursInSLU, I wanted to try something different. I decided to travel to and through the neighborhood using as many modes of transportation as possible. With only two hours, I knew that the recent transit service improvements and extension of the RapidRide C-Line into SLU, new dedicated transit lanes, and the launch of BMW's ReachNow carsharing service would make my expedition effortless. I heard about the Grand Opening of Downtown Dog Lounge through the SLU Chamber newsletter and decided to check it out with my friend and her puppy. I loaded my bike onto the SLU Streetcar from McGraw Square and was at Terry and Mercer after a rapid 7 minute ride. I locked up my bike at a rack conveniently located near the entrance and headed inside where the puppy received a free doggy biscuit."

Athletic Awards - Holdout Among SLU High-Rises

On May 12th, KIRO7 reported on one SLU Chamber's founding members, Athletic Awards.

"One of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the country is home to new, high-profile tenants, like Amazon and Facebook, but at least one business in South Lake Union has turned down handfuls of multimillion-dollar offers to sell its piece of the of the booming Seattle neighborhood.

The owner of Athletic Awards trophy shop says they aren't going anywhere.
Athletic Awards
The business opened in 1949 and moved to its current location in 1983. Despite all the growth around it, the family-owned business has weathered the construction storm and it's turning down developers, who call monthly to ask if they're willing to sell the property."

South Lake Union featured in Alaska Airlines Beyond Magazine

Here is what they had to say, "This emergent neighborhood -- which is home to world-class biotech facilities, and enormous Amazon campus, its own streetcar line and dozens of new restaurants -- used to be a patchwork of parking lots and warehouses.

South Lake Union might win for Seattle's fastest-changing neighborhood -- look around anywhere in this neighborhood and you'll see construction; turn right or left and you'll find a brand-new celebri-chef restaurant. The Museum of History & Industry relocated to a historic armory on the banks of the lake in 2012, and it's a love letter to local culture, from Boeing to Nirvana."
