United States Chains Continue to Eye
the Asia-Pacific Region 

Number 2 and 3 in the world for total Gross Domestic Product (China and Japan respectively) coupled with some of the fasting growing countries in terms of economy and technology; and you have a region ripe for product entrance.  Over the years when companies plot their international expansion they usually begin with countries they are familiar with or pursue the closest comparable target market to their current consumer.  Which in the past has lead to expansion primarily to Europe.  During the mid 2000s, brands were targeting the BRIC countries which include Brazil, Russia, India, and China because of their large population bases and financial support from their governments.  With Brazil and Russia each experiencing their own headwinds when it comes to their economic policy, the focus has now shifted to the Asia-Pacific Region to include not only China, but Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia among others.
 
Several food service concepts are beginning to catch on and are plotting their own expansion into the region.  When it comes to food service, there are not many organizations larger in unit count compared to Yum! Brands out of Louisville, KY.  On December 5th Taco Bell announced they were looking for a strategic partner in Japan and less than 3 months later, named Asapport Dining Company their franchise partner.  A brand that has garnered a lot of attention lately because of their successful IPO, Shakeshack, has made the same claims about their desire to expand into Japan.  On February 17th, Shakeshake announced they will enter Tokyo in 2016 via their partner Sazaby League, Ltd.

The most important indicators of success when entering the region are:
  1. An experienced local operator
  2. In-depth market research
  3. A strategic plan that takes both parties' capabilities into account
    1. The brand must understand opportunities and challenges that may be presented that could accelerate or decelerate the growth of the concept while the operator must understand the exact needs of the brand
  4. Financial Partner
    1. Joint Venture
    2. Master Franchisee

There is a long list of United States based chains that have found great success in the Asia-Pacific Region including McDonalds, Starbucks, KFC, and Dominos.  Several others are well into their campaigns including Tully’s, Sara Beths, and Subway.  Companies focused on growth will continue to look towards the Asian-Pacific region to achieve their goals.

Sunsect Expands via Black & Redd Solutions
 
Sunsect is the world’s first and only insect repellent, water resistant sunscreen. Sunsect is a patented product that combines DEET with sunscreen, and has been used by the U.S. Military for over 15 years. Lancet, a world renowned British Medical Journal, supports the findings of Sunsect in that without the special patented formulation, each component would actually deactivate each other by up to 50%.
 
Black & Redd Solutions is now the authorized representation for Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. Using the existing relationships Black & Redd has in the above regions, the product would fit most retail and military applications.

Black & Redd's Japan Trip Finds Great Success
 
Black & Redd Solutions spent a very successful week in Tokyo visiting many of their valued existing clients as well as many potential clients/partners.  We would like to thank everyone that gave us time and we are very excited about the opportunities going forward.  Our U.S. based clients showed very well and there was a lot of positive feedback regarding Good Time Beverages, Cakeballz, and Chef Minute Meals. 

New business opportunities were presented as well to Black & Redd and there will be announcements over the coming weeks regarding new strategic partnerships.
