Entering the States: How a Japanese Food Concept Made it Look Easy 

Beard Papa’s, founded by Mugino Co., Ltd. in 1999, has expanded to all corners of the globe serving cream puffs, fondant, cheesecake, tiramisu and their trademark product: choux pastry. Beard Papa's was founded by Yuji Hirota in the Japanese city of Osaka and now has over 300 locations.
As the concept began to expand, Beard Papa’s had one goal: expand into the United States.  The U.S. has a population of 321 million (2.5 x Japan’s population), spends $680 Billion ($230 Billion of that going to Limited-Service) a year at restaurants, and sees the Bakery/Café segment experiencing 8.1% forecasted prior year sales growth.  For Beard Papa’s, as is with most concepts looking to enter the U.S., the market is too large and too rewarding not to attempt.

Beard Papa’s entered the United States in 2003 under Muginoho International, Inc., located in Los Angeles, California.  They stayed true to their core products continuing to serve their cream puffs, which are made with premium all natural ingredients including real Bourbon vanilla beans and no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.  Their operations allow customers to view the entire production process, and the choux pastry dough is baked in an open kitchen, and packaged to order for every customer.

Barcelos, which began in 1993 in Pretoria, South Aftrica, has grown to over 130 locations serving millions of customers. Barcelos is world famous for their chicken which is marinated for 24 hours, prior to being char-grilled on open flame gas griddles, in one of their four primary spicy flavors of marinades.  They are lead by the original founders of the company and have had great success in rolling out their franchise model over several continents. Black & Redd begins sampling process for Mag-on in the USA
As detailed in the December Newsletter, Mag-on is a magnesium based sports supplement, which helps athletes combat cramps and other endurance hindering symptoms. Mag-on started in Tokyo, Japan and has gained measurable traction in the circles of triathletes. Good Time Beverages gains traction in Japan, Vietnam

Black & Redd Solutions is making huge strides to bring Good Time Beverages into Japan and Vietnam. Current targets are for the product to be placed in Lawson, a large convenience store chain in Japan and other Asian countries.
