The Diocesan Altar Guild Board would like to express our deepest appreciation to Christ Episcopal Church, Alameda all for hosting the local DAG meeting for the Alameda Deanery on January 9, this year.
The discussions we had at this meeting have been extremely helpful in the DAG’s efforts to ensure the kind of collegial teamwork that is so essential among those serving the altars of our Diocese.
Because the clergy and volunteer altar guilds work together as a team at our altars, we have become increasingly aware of how important the essentials of teamwork – communication, follow-up, engaging in dialogue, and mutual respect and understanding, really are.
We are confident that by fostering new ways these two groups — the clergy and the altar guilds — can learn to more effectively work together, we will be able to make a vital contribution to the experience of worship at our congregations’ altars.
We are especially grateful to The Rev. Stephen McHale, who welcomed us and led us in worship, and to Sheri Stock and her altar guild, who hosted us with coffee, mid morning snacks and a working lunch.
The prepared questions we posed at the meeting promoted wonderful table discussions, which we later transcribed into material that is becoming the basis for a collection of “Best Practices” for communication and teamwork, which we will post on the DAG website.
Meanwhile, we have already shared this material with the Rev Can. Stefani Schatz, who will help us fashion a presentation for Fresher Start, and with the Rev Can. Julia McCray Goldsmith, who help us craft a presentation for the deanery- based Equipping the Beloved Community conferences.
The meeting was enjoyable and productive, and the hospitality of CEC was so welcoming, we deeply appreciate Christ Church opening their doors to enable us to have this dialogue. Also, we are so grateful to all who attended the meeting and shared their views — which will now become the basis for our learning materials.
It was a wonderful meeting; many thanks to you all for your teamwork!
