The Arch_Tec_Lab Opens

On the 22 September 2016, the time finally arrived: The Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) of ETH Zurich officially opened its new institute building Arch_Tec_Lab. Characteristic are the building's digitally planned and prefabricated timber roof as well as the new Robotic Fabrication Laboratory (RFL), both planned by Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler. The NCCR Digital Fabrication's management team already moved into the new building and researchers are looking forward to working in the new laboratory.

Research Insight: Robotic Aggregation of Materials with Irregular Geometry

While many digital fabrication processes in architecture focus on using standardised prefabricated materials, NCCR Digital Fabrication researchers Martin Wermelinger and Fadri Furrer aim to use unprocessed materials found on-site to create new structures. An interdisciplinary research team from the Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL), the Robotic Systems Lab (RSL), and Gramazio Kohler Research (GKR) addresses this novel idea. As a proof of concept, the team has now successfully achieved autonomous robotic stacking of irregular stones without the use of mortars or adhesives.

Networking Event with "netzwerk Frau und sia" and "SVIN"

On the 29th of November, the NCCR Digital Fabrication is pleased to welcome members of the two Swiss associations "netzwerk Frau und sia" and "SVIN" as well as other interested parties to a networking and information event at the newly opened Arch_Tec_Lab. The event is part of the NCCR's equal opportunities program and aims at connecting researchers of the NCCR with the two associations who are dedicated to advancing women in the fields of architecture and engineering.
